Description

Picea pungens 'Jan Byczkowski' is a dwarf selection of Blue Spruce with a broadly conical habit and regular structure, which comes alive with very bright yellow young shoots in spring. This colour persists for up to 6 weeks, then the shoots take on a natural blue-grey hue like the mature foliage of this conifer. The yellow colouring of the shoots lasts longer if the spruce receives plenty of sunlight. It will make a beautiful specimen in a small garden.

Native to the west coast of the United States and the Rocky Mountains of North America, up to Canada, Picea pungens, also known as the Colorado Blue Spruce or Blue Spruce, is a very hardy evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family. In its natural environment, it grows slowly, displaying an elegant and very regular conical habit, supported by strongly tiered horizontal branches. This tree can reach 25 to 40 m in height, tolerating slightly calcareous soils and some drought. However, it prefers slightly acidic and moist, deep soils. Its location should be carefully considered, as it does not like being transplanted.

Picea pungens 'Jan Byczkowski' is a variety selected in Poland at the J. Z. B. Byczkowski nursery in Kostrzyn and introduced to the market in 2000. It is characterised by moderate size, shiny silvery-blue foliage, and distinctly yellow young shoots. At 10 years old, this conifer forms a fairly small pyramid reaching about 2 m in height and up to 1.2 m in width. Its height increases by about 20 cm per year, with fairly slow growth. It produces shoots covered with very short and prickly needles, arranged in dense brushes and radially around the shoots. Its young spring shoots are a beautiful bright yellow, then they turn silvery-blue and remain so throughout the year.

Blue Spruce 'Jan Byczkowski' needs staking when young to develop a pleasing and regular habit, but it forms a leading shoot relatively quickly compared to other varieties. It is a sparkling adornment in the garden all year round. It thrives in many situations, under various climates, provided the soil is well-drained and not too calcareous, and the exposure is sunny. Its small size makes it ideal for large rockeries or borders, and its silhouette will stand out as a solitary specimen. This conifer pairs well with mineral elements in the garden. It can be combined with spring or summer annuals, which will highlight its foliage. Conifers naturally fit into contemporary settings. They pair well with heathers or early bulbs like snowdrops, planted in large drifts.

Planting and care

Plant Picea pungens 'Jan Byczkowski' from September to November and from February to June in a fertile, well-drained, light, preferably neutral, slightly calcareous, neutral or slightly acidic soil, even dry in summer. A sandy, loamy, humus-bearing or slightly stony, not too calcareous soil will be suitable. Choose a sunny spot sheltered from prevailing winds. In overly damp conditions, it will be more susceptible to root rot. Select its location carefully, as this conifer does not appreciate transplanting. Soak the root balls well before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously during the first few years, and in case of prolonged drought. Every year in April, apply a special conifer fertiliser and hoe the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer dislikes heavy soils waterlogged in winter. Pruning is not necessary.
