Description

Picea omorika 'Aurea' is a very elegant variety of Serbian Spruce with a narrowly conical habit. It features pendulous branches that curve upwards at their tips. Its needles are initially yellow-green, gradually transitioning to blue and green, creating a unique tricolour effect blending golden, blue, and green hues. This conifer will look stunning as a standalone specimen or in groups. It is very hardy and adapts to all types of well-drained, moist soil.

The Serbian Spruce is a member of the Pinaceae family, native to Bosnia and Serbia. It is a rare species, endemic to the Drina Valley (in western and eastern Serbia), though it can also be found in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In its natural, often harsh environment, this tree exceeds 30m in height and displays a narrow pyramidal habit with pendulous branches. This conifer is very tolerant of soil conditions and pollution. Its shoots are covered with flattened needles, arranged in dense, aromatic brushes (with a resinous scent). They are dark green on top and feature two white bands underneath, giving the foliage a silvery sheen. This monoecious conifer bears small purple male and female flowers. These are followed by pendulous cones around 5cm long, which are particularly decorative: initially a striking violet-purple, they turn brown when ripe.

Picea omorika 'Aurea', derived from this species, has a more compact growth and does not produce flowers. With an average growth rate of 15–30cm per year, it will reach 9m in height and 3m in width at maturity. It also differs from the standard species due to the striking colour change of its needles—golden, green, and blue.

Serbian Spruce 'Aurea' can be planted in gardens across many regions. Thanks to its ease of cultivation and unique character, it is an ideal conifer for standalone planting or in groups of three, given its exceptional ornamental qualities. Due to its shallow root system and vulnerability to strong winds, young plants should be staked, and planting too close to buildings should be avoided. It is well-suited to contemporary gardens.

Planting and care

Plant Picea omorika 'Aurea' from September to November and from February to May in ordinary, well-drained, moist or occasionally dry, fertile soil, even calcareous. A sandy, humus-bearing or stony soil will suit it perfectly. Preferably choose a sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from prevailing winds, at a good distance from buildings. Stake the young plants. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously for the first few years, and during prolonged drought. Every year in April, apply a special conifer fertiliser and hoe the soil in summer. This very hardy conifer (down to at least -30°C) dislikes heavy, waterlogged soils in winter. Pruning is not necessary.
