Instead of the 1st one that didn't survive. Although very small, it still flowered but impossible to smell them unless you get down on your knees due to their size. New slightly coppery leaves emerge at the end of the shoots. Rapid growth not observed. Waiting for the definitive recovery and the next scented flowering.

Description

The Osmanthus delavayi is an evergreen bush with a spring flowering of white flowers in clusters, with a jasmine fragrance; it is best suited for temperate regions.

Originally from China, this 3-4m (10-13ft) tall Osmanthus, also known as Siphonosmanthus, forms a compact and globose bush. The opposite, leathery, shiny, dark green leaves are 3cm (1in) long and sometimes prickly. In April, clusters of tubular, highly scented white flowers, 5cm (2in) long, bloom and later give way to blue-black berries. Its fragrance is similar to that of jasmine.

The Osmanthus delavayi is hardy up to -10°C (14°F) and grows in any moist, fertile, well-worked and well-drained soil, even chalky, in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Find a sheltered spot for it, protected from strong winds and heavy frost. Mulch in autumn.

The Osmanthus delavayi is a fast-growing screening plant and is ideal for hedges with photinias, aucubas, and laurustinus, as well as for flower beds in white gardens.

Planting and care

The Osmanthus delavayi should be planted in spring with a spacing of 60/80cm (24/32in) for hedges. Dig a hole twice and a half times the size of the pot, loosen the bottom and add a large handful of horticultural compost or mix slow-release fertilizer with loose soil. Water well and mulch the soil to keep it fresh. After flowering, prune lightly to balance the shape and promote growth. It can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F) if the soil is well-drained and mulched in autumn.
