Description

Picea abies 'Acrocona', a variety of common spruce, is a moderate-sized conifer with a broad and pyramidal habit, interesting for several reasons. It first stands out for its dense and casual shrub-like appearance, often supported by multiple trunks, then for its charming pendulous branches, covered with beautiful evergreen foliage, and finally for its highly decorative spring cones, upright and ranging from pink to reddish-purple. It is also a hardy plant, robust and easy to grow in well-drained, even occasionally dry, soil. Its slow growth and small size make it particularly suitable for small gardens.

Picea abies, also known as Norway spruce or common spruce, is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family, native to northern Europe, specifically Scandinavia. In its natural environment, it has a typically conical and pyramidal habit and can reach a height of 30 m (98 ft). This species is traditionally used as a Christmas tree in Europe. It prefers well-drained and cool soils and is not afraid of very low temperatures.

The 'Acrocona' variety, derived from this species, is a dwarf form that often develops multiple trunks at the base. After 10 years, it forms a small tree 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) tall and 1.2 m (3 feet 11 inches) wide. Its growth is rather fast at first, then slows down significantly over the years. Eventually, it can reach a height of 3.5 m (11 feet 6 inches) and a diameter of 2 to 3 m (6 ft 7 in to 9 ft 10 in). It has layered branches that areĀ almost weeping and pendulous. Its young spring shoots are tender and bright green, then its foliage darkens and becomes green-blue. Its small evergreen leaves are rigid needles, very prickly, arranged in clusters around the branches. Cone production takes place in April. Initially upright, the female cones located at the ends of the branches resemble beautiful pink-red-purple cigars, then they turn caramel to yellow and adopt a pendulous position. The male pollen sacs appear on the previous year's branches; they are oval-shaped spindles and yellow-orange. The root system of spruces is shallow and spreading, making them difficult to transplant when mature and particularly sensitive to wind.

'Acrocona', with its beautiful habit, modest size, and ease of cultivation, is a perfect plant for small spaces. Its opulent silhouette will work wonders on a large slope, isolated on a lawn, or near a swimming pool, as it blends well with geometric lines and masonry structures. It can also be installed near a water feature, overlooking it, to engulf a rocky slope. The true graphic qualities of conifers naturally emerge in the design of a contemporary garden, which prefers the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures over the dance of blooms. They go well with mahonias, heathers, or wild grasses with complementary temperaments. The key is to play with volumes and colours.

Planting and care

Picea abies 'Acrocona' is planted from September to November and from February to June in deep, well-drained, light, neutral to occasionally dry soil. Choose a very sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls well before planting. Add organic compost at planting and water generously in the first few years, and in case of prolonged drought. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and cultivate the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer, however, fears heavy, waterlogged soils in winter. Pruning is not necessary, however, as this plant expresses its full potential when allowed to grow freely.
