Description

Philodendron applanatum is a rare houseplant that will delight enthusiasts of exotic plants. With its large lobed leaves, supported by flat petioles with an unusual design, this climbing species is truly fascinating. It adds a touch of sophistication to tropical or contemporary styles. This philodendron requires bright, indirect light and a certain level of ambient humidity to thrive.

Belonging to the Araceae family, Philodendron applanatum is a species native to the humid tropical forests of Peru, where it thrives by climbing tree trunks using its aerial roots. At maturity, indoors, this plant can reach around 1.50m in height with a spread of 1m. Its growth is moderate. Its bright green, slightly veined foliage is unique: its three-lobed leaves measure between 20 and 40 cm and are attached to the stems by flattened petioles. They are sometimes edged with a delicate yellow glow. Indoor flowering is rare and subtle, with spathes typical of the Araceae family. Caution: this plant is toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Philodendron applanatum fits perfectly in tropical, bohemian, or even minimalist settings, where it becomes the focal point of the room. Pair it with plants featuring graphic lines, such as Monstera adansonii or Philodendron micans, which share similar needs for light and humidity.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight for the Philodendron applanatum, as it would scorch its delicate leaves. High ambient humidity and temperatures between 18 and 25°C will suit it perfectly. It cannot tolerate temperatures below 15°C but can be placed outdoors in summer in temperate climates. Place it in a large terracotta or textured ceramic pot, set on a light wood floor for a Scandinavian look, or on a low black metal shelf in an industrial-style interior. With its climbing habit, it can be showcased on a decorative wood stake or a vintage ladder, or even hung to create a cascade of greenery in a bright conservatory.

Maintenance and care

Water by soaking to thoroughly moisten the root ball, allow the compost to dry out slightly between waterings. Mist the foliage regularly.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a mix of houseplant compost with clay pebbles and perlite to improve drainage.
Apply an NPK fertiliser for green plants (10-10-10) every 2 weeks in spring and summer.

Houseplant care

Dust the leaves with a damp cloth to promote photosynthesis and inspect the plant regularly to detect pests or diseases early.
Pruning is generally not necessary. However, it is recommended to regularly remove yellowed or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
