Planting and care

Plant your bulbs as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant the fritillaries at a depth of 10 cm (4in) and the tulips at 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height in soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a site in full sun for better flowering. When the flowers are over, cut the flower stalks but let the leaves dry completely before removing them. After flowering the foliage does become unsightly so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge at the front of your flower beds: their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, over the season, they will also elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
