As I prune them before bringing them indoors for winter to give them a dry season, I keep them for many years. It is easy to take cuttings of them.

Planting and care

Brugmansia arborea thrives in sunny to partially shaded positions. It requires rich, well-drained and moist soil. It is best planted in spring, after the last frosts, enriching the soil with well-rotted compost. During the growth period, regular watering is essential, ensuring the substrate remains slightly moist but not waterlogged. A fortnightly feed with flowering plant fertiliser will encourage abundant flowering. Being frost-sensitive (hardiness around -2°C), it is essential to grow it in a pot in regions with harsh winters so it can be brought indoors, into a conservatory or unheated greenhouse, during the colder months. Light pruning in late winter will help maintain a balanced shape and stimulate new growth. Handle Brugmansia with care due to its toxicity, wearing gloves during pruning or repotting, and keeping it out of reach of children and pets.

To grow Brugmansia arborea in a pot, choose a wide and deep container, with drainage holes at the bottom, at least 40 to 50 cm in diameter and height for a young plant. If the plant is already well-established, opt for a container around 60 to 80 cm in diameter and depth. Select a sturdy pot, ideally made of terracotta or frost-resistant resin, with drainage holes to prevent excess water. Repotting every 2 to 3 years is recommended to refresh the soil and maintain the plant's vitality.
