Strawberry plants in bare roots are rarely sold in garden centres; they are products that are mainly used by professionals. Upon receiving your package, you may be surprised by their appearance.

Indeed, young plants in bare roots are mostly composed of roots. The aerial part (leaves) is often almost absent. Do not worry: this is perfectly normal, and the recovery is generally excellent if you follow the planting instructions. Follow our tips to learn how to properly plant your strawberry plants in bare roots.

When to plant bare root strawberries?

Young plants of strawberry plants in bare roots should be planted as soon as they are received: do not let the roots dry out. If this operation is not possible promptly, you can keep them in the refrigerator or, in their packaging, in a cool place.

Planting of varieties with large fruits, whether perpetual or not, is preferably done at the end of summer and in autumn.

In contrast, four-season strawberry plants are planted in spring.

Where to plant your strawberry plants?

To plant your strawberry plants, choose:

  • a sunny spot for large-fruited varieties,
  • a partially shaded area for wild strawberries.

Strawberry plants can be grown both in the ground and in pots, suitable for placing on a terrace or balcony.

As perennials, they remain in place for 3 to 4 years.

In the vegetable garden, strawberry plants are good companions for garlic, beans, lettuce, onions, leeks, thyme, and spinach. However, they do not appreciate the company of cabbages and other brassicas.

In what soil to plant strawberries?

Strawberry plants thrive in rich, deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soils.

A few months before planting, loosen the soil with a organic fork and add a generous amount of well-matured compost. In calcareous soil, add turf and then plan for a mulch made from acidic materials (thorns, pine bark…).

How to plant?

Pralining Bare Root Plants:

Whether for planting in the ground or in pots, it is advisable to soak bare root plants in pralin to prevent the formation of air pockets between the roots and the soil.

Pralin is prepared by mixing 1/3 very fine soil or potting soil, 1/3 cow dung or compost, and 1/3 rainwater. The pralin can also be purchased commercially. This practice is not essential but allows for better establishment of strawberry plants.

Planting Strawberries in the Ground:

  • If your soil is moist, plant strawberries on mounds 10 to 20 cm high.
  • Space the plants 35 cm apart in all directions.
  • Dig a hole wide enough, place the plant spreading the roots out like a fan, and cover with fine soil (the collar should be level with the soil).
  • Water generously.

Planting Strawberries in Pots:

  • Place a layer of gravel or clay balls at the bottom of the pot to aid drainage.
  • Fill the pot with a mixture of potting soil, garden soil, and compost.
  • Place the plant spreading the roots out like a fan, cover with soil (the collar should be level with the soil), and firm down well.
  • Water generously.
