Description

The Spathiphyllum wallisii 'Tanni', poetically nicknamed the 'Peace Lily', is a beloved houseplant admired for its elegance and low maintenance. Its glossy dark green leaves and white, spathe-shaped, sail-like flowers add a refined touch to any home. It is an excellent choice for decorating living rooms, offices, or bedrooms, provided that it receives bright but indirect light.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Spathiphyllum wallisii is native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Colombia. The 'Tanni' variety is a horticultural selection. This perennial plant has a compact habit, reaching a height of 60 cm with a similar spread, depending on growing conditions. Its evergreen, deep green,  glossy leaves are lanceolate and measure between 20 and 25 cm in length. The flowers consisting of a white spathe surrounding a creamy spadix, primarily bloom from spring to summer, though they may appear sporadically year-round under optimal conditions.
The Spathiphyllum 'Tanni' prefers indirect light avoiding direct sunlight, and tolerates low-light environments, though brighter conditions will encourage more abundant flowering. It thrives in moderate humidity and an ideal temperature range of 18–24°C. Regular watering is needed to keep the soil slightly moist but avoiding waterlogging to prevent root rot. This plant adapts well to areas like a living room or bathroom, where it can enjoy both light and some humidity.

The Spathiphyllum 'Tanni' brings a touch of greenery and refined elegance to contemporary or classic interiors. It pairs effortlessly with other houseplants sharing similar care needs. For instance, the Anthurium andreanum, with its bright red flowers, creates an eye-catching contrast alongside it, while the Calathea makoyana adds complementary texture with its variegated foliage. With its heart-shaped leaves, the Philodendron scandens introduces a vertical attraction when placed nearby, while with its large, variegated leaves, the Dieffenbachia completes a lush arrangement. These combinations form a harmonious and visually pleasing display while providing for each plant’s growing requirements.

Location

Avoid placing the Spatiphyllum Tanni behind a window in direct sunlight without a sheer curtain to filter the light. Keep it away from draughts and direct heat sources such as radiators. Too much direct light can discolour the leaves, while insufficient light reduces flowering. Maintain ambient humidity by placing the pot on a bed of damp clay pebbles.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In summer, water 2 to 3 times a week; in winter, reduce to once a week. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week to maintain humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot your Spathiphyllum Tanni in spring, every 2 to 3 years, when the roots begin to overcrowd the pot. Between repottings, replace the top few centimetres of compost with fresh potting mix.
Use a houseplant compost enriched with turf to retain moisture, while ensuring good drainage with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for flowering plants (NPK 7-3-6). Use every two weeks from May to September to support flowering.

Houseplant care

The Spathiphyllum requires little maintenance. Clean the leaves regularly with a damp sponge to remove dust and maintain their shine.
Pruning is not necessary for the young plant. Once or twice a year, tidy up the foliage by removing dry or damaged leaves at the base, along with any spent flower stems.

Disease and pest advice

Common diseases include yellowing of the leaves due to excess water or overly cool air. To combat scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Maintain high ambient humidity by placing the pot on a bed of gravel kept in water and by regularly spraying the leaves; this will reduce the risk of red spider mites appearing.
