Description

The 'Super Trouper' rose bush produces cut flower arrangements of double and regular roses in vibrant orange tones that stand out beautifully against its dark green foliage. Compact and highly repeat flowering, this bush provides flamboyant colour to borders and homemade cut flower arrangements. Its ornamental qualities and proven resilience have earned it the "Golden Palm" of the plant world.

A member of the Rosaceae family, 'Super Trouper' bears the varietal name ‘Fryleyeca’. It was developed in the United Kingdom by rose breeder Gareth Fryer before 2008 and introduced commercially in 2009 by Fryer’s Roses. This cultivar is distributed in New Zealand under the name Christchurch. It belongs to the horticultural group of Floribunda roses, with clustered flowers. Its qualities have been recognised with the Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
This is a small bush with a dense, bushy, rather upright habit and fairly rapid growth. It reaches 70 to 90 cm in height and 60-80 cm in width. Its stems are thorny, and its young shoots are reddish. The deciduous foliage is formed of oval, leathery leaflets, dark green and very glossy, with low susceptibility to foliar spots.
The repeat flowering, in clusters, extends from June to October. The double flowers, which have 17 to 25 petals in a classic shape, measure 7 to 9 cm in diameter. Their colour ranges between tangerine orange and coppery orange; the flowers are darker in cool weather; their fragrance is light to moderate. The foliage is absent in winter.

Plant the Floribunda rose 'Super Trouper' in full sun, in rich, deep, well-drained soil, in a rose bed, as a border, or in a large container (minimum 40–50 cm diameter). Its orange tones combine well with white, yellow, and blues, as well as with the silver foliage of artemisias and the anise green of common lady's mantle. Among perennials, consider for example Nepeta 'Kit Cat', Aster ericoides 'Schneetanne' and ornamental grasses like Chinese fountain grass which add lightness and movement. It forms interesting combinations with cream or apricot Floribunda roses, for example 'Martin des Senteurs', 'Sweet Dream' and 'Marina Picasso'.

Planting and care

Plant the Super Trouper floribunda rose from November to March in ordinary, well-loosened and drained soil. Roses favour clay soils, preferring heavier to lighter ones. In soil that is too sandy, too compact, or too dry in summer, it is preferable to incorporate potting compost, well-rotted manure, or compost at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dislikes waterlogged soil in winter. Position it in a sunny spot, or at a push, in partial shade. Roses are hungry plants; an application of specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of growth, then regularly throughout the entire flowering period.

Roses often become spotted or unsightly by late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not dangerous for the rose; it is a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice to remedy this and consult our article: Help: I have spots on my roses.
