Description

Cornus florida 'Cherokee Daybreak' is interesting for its flowering and its foliage. The flowering is characterized by large white bracts, and the foliage is variegated, turning pink and then red in autumn.

Cornus florida 'Cherokee Daybreak' is a flowering bush native to North America. From the month of May, clusters are formed composed of small green flowers with yellow tips, 0.5 to 2cm (0.2 to 0.8 in) long. The clusters are surrounded by large white bracts. Its abundant flowering, even in young subjects, is followed by the formation of non-edible red fruits, 1cm (0.4 in) in diameter, during the months of September and October.

The Florida Dogwood has deciduous, shiny green foliage edged with white and turning pink and then red in autumn. The leaves measure from 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in) long and are wide, ovate, and pointed. This Cornus has layered branches.

This bush, with a conical habit and compact growth, is a very hardy species that suits all climates. It can reach up to 2.5m (8 ft 2 in) in height. It is a very decorative dogwood for its spring flowering and its beautiful pink autumn foliage. It is interesting as a solitary plant for small gardens, in flower beds, and as an informal hedge.

Planting and care

Cornus Florida 'Cherokee Daybreak' is best planted in a sunny or partially shaded position. It enjoys the warmth, which helps with its flowering, and is susceptible to late spring frost. Place it in ordinary soil without too much limestone and preferably with an acidic tendency. The soil should be moist but well-drained. It can be planted in spring or autumn (frost-free). The Florida Dogwood is easy to grow, requiring little maintenance. Pruning is not essential. Be careful of parasitic attacks such as anthracnose, which can cause severe damage.
