Received the plan, beautiful foliage. We need to wait for the flowering to have a final opinion.

Description

The Rudbeckia fulgida 'Early Bird Gold' is a bright variety of rudbeckia that stands out for its compact habit and early, long, and brilliant summer flowering. This perennial sunflower offers large, trailing suns with a nonchalant elegance from June to October, displaying a collar of petals in an implacable golden yellow, radiating around a slightly prominent, dark brown center that appears almost black. This hardy plant with a rustic charm requires a rather fresh, fertile, deep, and well-drained soil, as well as a sunny exposure.

The Rudbeckia fulgida 'Early Bird Gold' is a type of perennial sunflower belonging to the Asteraceae family, originating from beautiful horticultural varieties that have somewhat overshadowed it in recent years. Nevertheless, it is an excellent cultivar of Rudbeckia fulgida, a botanical species native to North America, specifically the southeastern United States, and grows well in both dry and wet soils, open woods, clearings, and even copse. It is a rhizomatous and stoloniferous perennial plant with a compact clump habit, developing mostly unbranched stems reaching a minimum height of 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in), with a spread of 50 to 80 cm (20 to 32in). The deciduous foliage is composed of lanceolate, medium-greyish green, slightly pubescent leaves. The flowering takes place continuously from June to October. The large, slightly trailing flower heads can reach a width of 10 cm (4in), with a magnificent golden yellow colour and a prominent conical centre that is very dark. This plant slowly spreads through rhizomes and can eventually form large colonies.

The Rudbeckias attract all eyes, and mark the landscape with their golden yellow petals surrounding an almost always prominent and black centre, creating a striking contrast. Both an architectural and accent plant, the 'Early Bird Gold' Rudbeckia quickly fills out flower beds thanks to its dense and compact habit, whilst also offering an ornamental interest that is out of the ordinary. This plant's sunny flowering requires it to be associated, in flower beds, with the deep blue of perennial delphiniums or the vibrant red of salvias, alongside ephemeral flowering plants, such as evening primroses (oenothera versicolor Sunset Boulevard), tall thistles (Milk Thistle, Cardoon, Scotch Thistle), inulas, within a rustic garden, or along water points that it also appreciates. Its extraordinary flowers will be highlighted by those of cat-tails and the graphic design of tall miscanthus (Miscanthus sinensis Yaku-jima, Miscanthus sinensis Silberspinne, Miscanthus transmorrisonensis).

Planting and care

Hardy and disease-resistant, this Rudbeckia fulgida 'Early Bird Gold' is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance (simply prune the faded flowers in early November). It thrives in ordinary soil, even occasionally dry (outside of the flowering period), with a preference for well-drained, sunny locations. The stems are sturdy and do not require staking, except in windy conditions. Divide the plants when the clumps become too crowded. Remove faded flowers to prolong the flowering. Alternatively, you can leave the faded flowers in place, along with their fruits that will serve as food for birds.
