Description
China Aster or Callistephus chinensis 'King Size Mid-Blue' is a spectacular variety that enhances the garden with its large double flowers, in a stunning deep blue sometimes verging on blue-violet. A colour that brings freshness and depth to summer displays, both in the garden and in bouquets. Sow this vigorous annual plant under cloches in spring or directly in open ground, as soon as temperatures warm up.
Native to China and a member of the large Asteraceae family, the China Aster has been cultivated for centuries for the beauty of its flowering. The 'King Size' series is the result of a Dutch horticultural breeding programme focused on producing high-quality cut flowers. These cultivars have been developed to offer large flowers, prolonged flowering, increased disease resistance and varied colours.
The 'King Size Mid-Blue' cultivar forms a well-branched clump reaching approximately 90 cm in height and 40 cm in width. Its flower stems are strong and generally do not require staking. Its bright green foliage further enhances its large 8 cm diameter flowers, composed of multiple slightly curved petals. The flowering spreads from August to October, depending on the sowing date, providing a display for several weeks. Used in borders, this variety structures floral compositions due to its tall stature. In a vase, it shows remarkable staying power. Callistephus chinensis follows a classic annual growth cycle: sown in spring, the plant germinates quickly, flowers and then withers with the arrival of autumn. It is therefore a true annual: it lives, flowers and dies in a single season.
The China Aster is now reclaiming its rightful place in cottage gardens or flower beds. When faded flowers are regularly removed, the plants flower for nearly 2 months. To enhance the 'King Size Mid-Blue' variety, pair it with plants in soft tones such as white or pink cosmos, or with silver foliage like that of Dusty Miller 'Silver Dust'. Sow it with the lovely double China Aster 'Duchess' in a mix. And to gather an abundance of flowers, why not also sow a few rows in the vegetable garden?

Planting and care
Sowing King Size Mid-Blue Marguerites:
Never sow these plants in the same location for two consecutive years. Sow outdoors from April to May, then transplant once the young plants have 2 to 4 leaves, spacing them 40 cm apart in well-loosened, moist, and well-manured soil, choosing a sunny location. Water frequently but sparingly. It is beneficial to transplant several times while keeping the root ball intact to encourage root development and slightly restrain stem growth, which might otherwise break under the weight of the flowers.
For earlier flowering, sow under a cold frame or in seed trays from February to April. Sow the Marguerites in trays filled with sand and peat under shelter at a temperature of 16 to 20 °C. Transplant into individual small pots when the seedlings have at least four leaves. Plant them in the garden when they reach a height of 15 cm. Use stakes to support the taller varieties with very double flowers. A later sowing in June allows for staggered flowering until late autumn. You can then sow directly in the garden.
Growing:
These plants prefer a neutral or slightly chalky, fertile, and well-drained soil and require a sunny exposure. Water generously twice a week during dry periods, but take care to water the base and not the foliage, as Marguerites are susceptible to powdery mildew. Remember to remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong flowering and prevent the plant from weakening.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
