Growing a rose in a pot is an excellent idea to make the most of its flowering! You can place it on the terrace, just outside the house. There are many varieties of roses, and some are better suited than others to container culture. Prefer compact varieties that do not become very large, and miniature roses are obviously well suited. Similarly, roses grafted onto Rosa multiflora are fairly well adapted, as their root system is limited. Avoid larger, more vigorous roses, such as liana roses.
To plant your roses, choose a large pot or tub, and place a drainage layer at the bottom (gravel, pumice, clay pebbles…), about 5 cm thick. Then plant into a mix of potting compost, garden soil and well-rotted compost. Also remember to water generously after planting and, in general, continue to water your roses grown in containers regularly, because the growing medium dries out much faster than in the ground, and apply fertiliser from time to time.
In this fact sheet we present our selection of the 8 best roses to grow in a pot or tub. For more choice, discover our full range of roses for pots.
Sweet Dream
‘Sweet Dream’ is a dwarf rose, not exceeding 45 cm in height. It flowers from June to October, and bears beautiful double flowers, apricot-coloured, gathered in clusters. Flowers are cup-shaped, very elegant. Their delicate, fresh and radiant colour is particularly appealing! As flowers open, their colour lightens to a very soft shade. It also has the advantage of being disease-resistant. Leaves are small, dark green and healthy. These many qualities earned rose ‘Sweet Dream’ the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
This rose will easily find a place in a pot on a terrace. You can pair it with plants in brighter, zesty shades, for example pink, orange or yellow. You can place alongside it fuchsias, for example the hardy variety ‘Mme Cornelissen’, agastaches (for example ‘Kudos Coral’), bidens or annual verbenas. Also consider planting ornamental ivy at its base; its foliage will spill attractively over the outside of the pot.

When and how to prune roses in pots?Emera
‘Emera’ is a decorative rose that offers abundant flowering from May until October–November. It grows to 70–80 cm tall, with a 40 cm spread. Its flowers are semi-double and have a beautiful fuchsia-pink colour, a bright, dynamic shade! They measure about 5 cm in diameter. It also has handsome glossy green foliage, semi-evergreen. It holds the ADR label, a German award that assesses the most resistant and vigorous roses on various criteria: resistance to diseases, to parasitic pests, to frost and drought, abundance of flowering, durability of the flowers, fragrance, habit, etc. Roses carrying this label are therefore of high ornamental quality and require little maintenance. And as if that were not enough, the ‘Emera’ rose was also awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)… You can therefore adopt it without hesitation!
As its flowering is quite vivid, we recommend pairing it with flowers in softer tones (white, pale pink…) and with light, airy flower displays. Choose, for example, Gaura, gypsophilas, ornamental grasses, Penstemon… Also consider the beautiful white flowering of annual euphorbias. The ‘Emera’ rose will also be wonderful alongside silvery foliage: artemisia, Stachys byzantina, santolina…

Charming
‘Charmant’ is a compact miniature rose that bears fully double, bright pink flowers. It is slightly wider than tall: up to 40 cm tall with a spread of 50 cm. It flowers first in late spring, from May to June, then again in September. It bears numerous small flowers gathered in clusters. Flowers measure about 4 cm in diameter. When flowers are fully open, they reveal a centre of yellow stamens. So flowers are small but very numerous, and gathered in clusters, creating a massed effect. Moreover, they are delicately scented! It also holds the ADR label, which guarantees a disease-resistant rose. It is therefore easy to grow and requires little maintenance.
Pair it with white flowers such as Gaura lindheimeri or Salvia nemorosa ‘Schneehügel’, or with blue-mauve blooms: nepetas, hardy geraniums, campanulas, lobelias… Plant alchemillas and heucheras at its feet in a large container for their decorative foliage.
Astronomy
Dedicated to the Observatoire de Paris, the ‘Astronomia’ rose is a very beautiful variety that flowers from June until November. It produces single flowers, 5 to 7 cm in diameter, consisting of only five large petals, very pale pink in colour, with a more or less dentate edge. They surround a cluster of orange-red stamens, very decorative, resembling small stars. Flowering is very airy and light! Relatively compact, this rose reaches up to 70 cm in all directions, and has healthy, dense, dark green, glossy foliage. This is a modern polyantha rose that is fairly easy to grow and robust.
Its simple, natural style is much appreciated! It therefore pairs easily with other perennials that have a rustic, wild look. Plant at its feet, or in a pot beside it, scabious, gaura, penstemon, grasses, bidens…
The Fairy
‘The Fairy’ is a delightful small rose with a spreading, groundcover habit. When grown in a pot, its long stems spill prettily over the rim! It flowers late, from July, and its flowering then continues until the frosts. Fully double and about 3 cm in diameter, its pale pink flowers resemble little pom-poms! Its name The Fairy (‘enchantment’) suits it perfectly! Its stems are slender, bronze-green in colour, and semi-evergreen. After several years it can reach up to 90 cm wide and 80 cm high. It is an almost foolproof rose — vigorous and undemanding! It was awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticulture Society (RHS).
With its soft-pink, double pom-pom flowers, the rose ‘The Fairy’ pairs wonderfully with other flowers in pastel shades: mauve, pale pink, white… to create a very romantic atmosphere! Choose, for example, gypsophilas, annual euphorbias, miniature carnations or scabious. Don’t hesitate to pair it with silvery foliage: artemisias, Stachys byzantina, santolina, Senecio cineraria…
Coral Babylon Eyes
‘Coral Babylon Eyes’ is a dwarf rose that offers original flowering! It bears splendid cup-shaped flowers, with coral-pink petals on the outside, then yellow, and maculate with dark red towards the centre of the flower! In addition, the heart of the flower bears a cluster of yellow stamens. The contrast between these colours is striking, and the eye is automatically drawn to the centre of the flower! The flowers are semi-double, measuring 5 to 8 cm in diameter. Furthermore, it is a perpetual rose, flowering from May–June through to October. It grows to up to 1 m tall and 75 cm wide and bears healthy foliage, not very susceptible to disease. This variety originates from the Persian Rose, Rosa persica, and has inherited good resistance to heat and drought!
We recommend pairing it with other plants in warm tones, such as Alstroemeria, Bidens, nasturtiums, helianthemums… Add a few clumps of Carex, for example the variety ‘Bronze Form’, which offers superb coppery-brown foliage.
Berleburg
‘Berleburg’ rose is a shrub rose producing pink, very double flowers borne in clusters. They measure 4 cm in diameter and consist of around forty imbricate petals, reminiscent of old garden roses. Its flowering is fairly classic but remains very elegant and romantic! It offers a long flowering period, from June to October, and thus remains in flower for almost five months. Foliage is healthy. At ripeness, it reaches up to 80 cm tall and 60 cm wide.
We recommend pairing it with white-, pink-, blue- or mauve-flowering plants, for a very romantic effect! Choose gypsophilas, mini carnations, hardy geraniums, asters… Favour light, airy flowering and make the most of grasses’ fine foliage. You can also create a striking contrast by planting at the base of the rose heucheras with dark foliage, for example ‘Obsidian’, or Geranium pratense ‘Midnight Reiter’.
Decorative rosebush 'Calizia'
We like the decorosier ‘Calizia’ for its very luminous flowering, in a salmon‑orange colour! The shade changes as the flowers open: at first a deep orange, then progressively paler. The tones are magnificent! In addition, in the centre between the petals you can see pretty yellow stamens, adding even more brightness. Flowering lasts a long time, with flowers opening from May until the first frosts. They are semi-double, measure 4 to 5 cm in diameter, and are borne in clusters. This rose grows up to 70 cm high and 40 cm wide, and has shiny green foliage, semi-evergreen.
It holds the ADR label, which guarantees high ornamental quality and good resistance to adverse weather conditions and diseases. You can therefore adopt it without hesitation!
We recommend pairing the rose ‘Calizia’ with plants in warm tones: yellow, orange, bronze, gold, chocolate… Choose Coreopsis, Bidens (for example ‘Yellow Charm’) or Helianthemum. Also make the most of the coloured foliage of Heuchera (for example ‘Caramel’) and Carex.
