Description

The Guzmania 'Melissa' is a tropical Bromeliad that stands out as an elegant and charming houseplant. Its bright salmon-pink bracts immediately catch the eye and perfectly complement its dense, glossy foliage. This relatively easy-to-grow variety fits ideally into contemporary, bohemian, or tropical settings, creating a warm yet refined atmosphere.

The Guzmania 'Melissa' belongs to the Bromeliad family, like Tillandsia. Selected for its beauty and adaptability to modern interiors, this cultivar results from cross-breeding between different species, notably Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania monostachia, native to Central and South America. These epiphytic species, which grow naturally on trees in tropical forests, have passed on their preference for fairly humid conditions to the plant. The Guzmania 'Melissa' captivates with its uncommon salmon-pink floral bracts, which emerge in summer from the centre of an elegant rosette of glossy green leaves. These bracts, often mistaken for flowers, are actually modified leaves surrounding the true, small and short-lived flowers. Fairly easy to care for, it reaches a height of 50 cm with a spread of 40 cm at ripeness. Place it in a bright space, away from direct sunlight, and maintain a humid atmosphere to best replicate its natural conditions. It prefers temperatures between 18 and 27°C.

To highlight its elegance, pair the Guzmania Melissa with species featuring lush and contrasting foliage, such as Dracaenas or Philodendron 'Brasil', which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Maintenance and care

Water by pouring water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist, but not excessively so.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the plant becomes too large for its pot, but it enjoys being slightly root-bound.
Use a mix of orchid compost and turf, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser for houseplants once a month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary; simply remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
