Description

Guzmania 'Loja' is a highly decorative tropical bromeliad. Its bracts display a striking bicolour combination of rosy pink and bright yellow. They instantly catch the eye and elegantly complement its dense, glossy foliage. Perfect for adding a touch of exoticism and colour, this variety fits beautifully in contemporary, bohemian, or tropical interiors. It requires bright, indirect light and good ambient humidity.

Guzmania 'Loja' is a cultivar from the Bromeliaceae family, selected for its beauty and adaptability to modern interiors. This variety results from cross-breeding between different Guzmania species, notably Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania monostachia, native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. These epiphytic species naturally grow on trees in humid forests. In spring or summer, depending on growing conditions, Guzmania 'Loja' produces large floral bracts in a lovely rosy pink hue, from which small bright yellow flowers emerge from an elegant rosette of glossy green leaves. It is easy to care for and reaches a height of 50 cm and a spread of 40 cm at maturity. The plant prefers temperatures between 18 and 27°C. This Guzmania variety is semelparous, meaning the rosette dies after producing its spectacular inflorescence, but it may form offsets (shoots at the base) that allow the plant to regenerate.

Guzmania 'Loja' thrives in contemporary, minimalist, or exotic interiors. To enhance this plant, pair it with varieties featuring lush, contrasting foliage, such as Dracaenas or Philodendron 'Brasil', which enjoy similar conditions.

Location

Avoid exposing the Guzmania Loja to direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as draughts and direct heat sources like radiators. Excessively dry air can harm the young plant; maintain ambient humidity by misting the foliage regularly or using a humidifier. This plant pairs particularly well with natural materials such as light wood, rattan or bamboo, but also works in a minimalist décor to add a splash of colour.

Maintenance and care

Pour non-calcareous water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Water into the rosette once a week in summer. Reduce watering in winter and avoid stagnant water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot, but it enjoys being snug. The Guzmania develops few roots and is content with a small pot around 10 cm in diameter. However, if you wish to separate the offsets from the parent plant, carry out this task in spring.
Use a mixture of orchid compost and turf, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser for houseplants once a month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary; simply remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
