Description

Guzmania 'Candy' is a tropical bromeliad that stands out as a highly decorative houseplant. Its bushy bracts emerge cream-white and transform into a beautiful mix of lilac and candy pink. Paired with its dense, glossy foliage, they bring an exotic and colourful touch to any room. This versatile variety fits perfectly into contemporary, bohemian, or tropical decors.

Guzmania 'Candy' is a cultivar from the Bromeliaceae family, selected for its beauty and adaptability to modern interiors. This variety is the result of cross-breeding between different Guzmania species, notably Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania monostachia, native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. These epiphytic species, which grow naturally on trees in humid forests, have passed on to this cultivar its preference for a humid atmosphere. Guzmania 'Candy' captivates with its bicoloured floral bracts that emerge between spring and summer at the centre of an elegant rosette of green, glossy leaves. These bracts, often mistaken for flowers, are actually modified leaves surrounding the true flowers, which are small and short-lived. The plant reaches a height of 45 to 50 cm and a spread of 40 cm at maturity and is easy to care for. It prefers temperatures between 18 and 27 °C. Place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and ensure a humid atmosphere to replicate its natural conditions.

Guzmania 'Candy' finds its place in contemporary, minimalist, or exotic interiors thanks to its tropical appearance. To enhance this plant, pair it with species featuring contrasting lush foliage, such as Dracaenas or Philodendron 'Brasil', which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Location

Avoid exposing the Guzmania Candy to direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch, as well as drafts and direct heat sources like radiators. Excessively dry air can harm the young plant; maintain ambient humidity by misting the foliage regularly or using a humidifier. With its compact size and lovely spreading habit, it’s perfect for enhancing a modern or exotic interior. Placed on a coffee table, shelf, or bright corner, it adds an elegant tropical touch. This plant pairs particularly well with natural materials like light wood, rattan, or bamboo, but also works in a minimalist décor to introduce a pop of colour.

Maintenance and care

Water by pouring soft water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Water into the rosette once a week in summer. Reduce watering in winter and avoid standing water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot, but it enjoys being snug. The Guzmania develops few roots and is content with a small pot around 10 cm in diameter. However, if you wish to separate the offsets from the parent plant, carry out this task in spring.
Use a mix of orchid compost and turf, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser for houseplants once a month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary, but remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the look of the plant.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
