Description

Guzmania 'Hilda' is an elegant and highly decorative tropical bromeliad. Its bright, vibrant yellow bracts immediately catch the eye and create a striking contrast with the dense, glossy foliage. Perfect for adding a touch of exoticism and colour, this variety fits seamlessly into contemporary, bohemian, or tropical interiors, bringing a warm and refined atmosphere. It requires bright, indirect light and good ambient humidity.

Guzmania 'Hilda' is a cultivar from the Bromeliaceae family. This variety results from cross-breeding between different Guzmania species, notably Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania monostachia, native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. These epiphytic species grow naturally on trees in humid forests. The Guzmania 'Hilda' has captivating, bright yellow floral bracts, which emerge from an elegant rosette of glossy green leaves between spring and summer, depending on growing conditions. These bracts, often mistaken for flowers, are actually modified leaves surrounding the true, small and ephemeral flowers. Easy to care for, it reaches a height of 50 cm with a spread of 40 cm at maturity.

Guzmania 'Hilda' blends harmoniously into contemporary, minimalist, or exotic interiors thanks to its tropical charm and vibrant colours. To showcase this plant, pair it with species featuring lush and contrasting foliage, such as Dracaenas or Philodendron 'Brasil', which share similar care requirements.

Location

Avoid exposing the Guzmania Hilda to direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as drafts and direct heat sources like radiators. Excessively dry air can harm the young plant; maintain ambient humidity by misting the foliage regularly or using a humidifier. Placed on a coffee table, shelf, or in a bright corner, it adds an elegant tropical touch. This plant pairs particularly well with natural materials like light wood, rattan, or bamboo, but also works in a minimalist décor to add a pop of colour.

Maintenance and care

Pour non-calcareous water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Water into the rosette once a week in summer. Reduce watering in winter and avoid stagnant water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot, but it enjoys being snug. The Guzmania develops few roots and is content with a small pot around 10 cm in diameter. However, if you wish to separate the offsets from the parent plant, carry out this operation in spring.
Use a mix of orchid compost and turf, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser for houseplants once a month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary; simply remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
