Description

The Philodendron 'Fat Boy', or more simply Philodendron martianum, is an exotic houseplant that captivates with its sculptural silhouette and easy care. With its thick, fleshy stems and rosettes of glossy, deep green leaves, it makes a stunning centrepiece in modern, tropical, or minimalist décor. Place this philodendron in soft, indirect light and ensure some humidity around its lush foliage. Avoid overwatering: it prefers slightly dry soil between waterings.

A member of the Araceae botanical family, Philodendron martianum is a tropical perennial native to the humid forests of southeastern Brazil. In its natural habitat, it grows sheltered under the canopy, explaining its adaptability to low-light interiors. With moderately fast growth, this plant typically reaches a height of 50 to 80 cm and a spread of 60 cm at maturity. Its leaves, with a tough, glossy texture, average 20 to 30 cm in length. They boast a shiny green that beautifully catches the light. Its compact, bushy foliage is supported by sturdy, thick stems, resembling small trunks, which earned it the nickname "Fat Boy". This is not a climbing plant. Unlike many philodendrons that develop aerial stems or adventitious roots to climb, its stems grow upright or slightly spreading, without clinging or climbing. It's a perfect plant for pots or planters—no stakes or supports needed!

To create a chic, refined tropical atmosphere, pair the Philodendron Fat Boy with, for example, the Calathea orbifolia, with its round, silver-striped leaves, and the Anthurium clarinervium, whose heart-shaped leaves are adorned with white veins.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, without letting water stagnate in the saucer. Lightly mist the leaves.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with clay pebbles for good drainage
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) every 4 weeks in spring and summer. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

Remove dust from the leaves regularly with a soft, damp cloth.
Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove dead or yellowed leaves to encourage the growth of new shoots.

In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in a mixture of warm water and black soap.
