Description

Philodendron verrucosum 'Incensi' is a rare and exotic houseplant, prized for its large velvety leaves with thick, contrasting veins that exude a tropical vibe. A stunning addition to urban jungle interiors, this plant is best suited for experienced plant enthusiasts. It thrives in bright spaces without direct sunlight. To ensure its well-being, maintain high ambient humidity and avoid cold draughts.

Philodendron verrucosum 'Incensi' is a climbing plant from the Araceae family, with wild ancestors originating from the tropical forests of Central and South America. In its natural habitat, Philodendron verrucosum grows as a hemiepiphyte, clinging to trees to reach the light. Its heart-shaped, deep green and velvety leaves feature broad, numerous contrasting veins in light green, reddish, or golden hues. They measure between 20 and 30 cm in length. The petioles are often covered in bumps and fine hairs (the species name "verrucosum" refers to the unique appearance of the petioles). Indoors, in a pot, this variety reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm with a similar spread; its growth is rapid under favourable conditions. Flowering is rare in indoor cultivation, and its inflorescences, typical of Araceae, are subtle. This plant is toxic if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Philodendron verrucosum 'Incensi' fits perfectly into a jungle-style setting, planted in a wicker pot with a moss pole, or in a contemporary decor where its striking foliage contrasts with minimalist furniture. Pair it with Monstera adansonii and Alocasia 'Polly' to create a lush atmosphere in bright, humid spaces like a living room or bathroom.

Maintenance and care

Allow the compost to dry out slightly between waterings and mist regularly, especially in winter to compensate for dry air.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Mix a houseplant compost with perlite or clay pebbles for drainage.
Apply a fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) once a month in spring and summer.

Houseplant care

The young plant regularly sheds its lower leaves. Remember to clean the foliage to remove dust and maintain its shine.
Remove damaged leaves regularly to promote healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and apply an appropriate organic treatment.
