Description

The 'Ovired' Cos Lettuce is an original mini-cos variety, with dark red leaves veined with green. It can be grown as baby leaves for an early and tender harvest, or as small, compact hearts if given more space. Both decorative and tasty, it combines crunch and sweetness; an ideal choice for diversifying salads! Selected by the seed company Enza Zaden, it stands out for its good post-harvest keeping qualities and its versatility in the garden.
Sow from February to July for a harvest from June to October.

The 'Ovired' cos lettuce grows very well in organic cultivation.

Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilos are consumed per person per year), as much for its freshness and crunch as for its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be eaten raw, in salads, as a mix of colourful baby leaves, but also cooked, for example, to accompany peas or stews.
The leaf vegetable par excellence, Lettuce is an annual plant belonging to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any self-respecting kitchen garden and, thanks to the diversity of its varieties, it is possible to harvest it almost all year round. Growing lettuce is easy as long as you follow the cultivation calendar for each variety. Its growth is rapid, and it thrives in any rich, well-drained soil that remains moist.

Harvesting the 'Ovired' cos lettuce: harvest with a knife, either by cutting tender leaves from young shoots, or by picking the small hearts once they are well-formed.
Storage: Lettuce keeps for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy it at its freshest, consume it quickly after harvest. Cooked lettuce can be frozen.

The gardener's little tip: slugs and snails are fond of young salad leaves. To protect your crops without harming beneficial wildlife, use  a natural slug killer Ferramol, based on ferric phosphate, effective and non-toxic, to be applied a few days before sowing.

Planting and care

Sowing of Romaine Lettuce 'Ovired':

Lettuce germination occurs at a temperature of around 18°C and takes on average 10 days.

Sow from February to July for a harvest from May to October.

On loosened and well-prepared soil, draw furrows spaced 20 cm apart, with a depth of 0.5 cm. Sow in a line, spacing the seeds 4 cm apart and cover. After emergence, when the young plants are well developed, thin out to leave only one young plant every 20 cm.

If your vegetable garden is often prey to slugs and snails, we advise you to sow under cover, in small plugs, and to plant them in the garden when the young plants are well developed.

Cultivation of Lettuce 'Ovired':

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it nevertheless requires a humus-bearing soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is best to apply, preferably in autumn, a moderate amount of mature compost by raking to a depth of 5 cm, after having thoroughly loosened the soil as with any vegetable crop. It appreciates slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

Remember that lettuce appreciates moist soils, and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good neighbour, it is a crop that easily fits in between other vegetables with slower growth such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Simply avoid proximity to maize.
