The Acaena magellanica I received looks healthy, planted in a rockery near a rosemary. Now, I'm waiting for it to take root... (or not?).

Description

The Acaena magellanica is an excellent hardy ground cover resembling a burnet with a unique fruiting. The bronze foliage in autumn announces winter gently. Plant without delay in dry and rocky gardens.

This perennial forms a dense mat of finely cut green leaves, on which spheres of tiny white flowers appear in June-July. Globular and spiny brown-copper fruits stand out above the bronze foliage in autumn.

The Magellan Bursage is a subantarctic plant found everywhere in the Southern Hemisphere; it belongs to the rose family. The plant grows quickly but is not considered invasive as its growth is easily controllable. The branches spread and root when in contact with the ground, but lifting the rooted stems is enough to remove them so they can be replanted further away. This makes it easy to manage the growth of the plant.

Perfectly hardy, Acaena magellanica is ideal in rock gardens, as a border plant or as ground cover at the base of bushes accompanied by spring bulbs and vibrant-coloured grasses such as Imperata cylindrica Red Baron. It also grows very well in troughs or pots. Paired with small sedums, houseleeks or saxifrages, or small grasses, Acaena can also be used on green roofs or walls.
