More information

This Ixia forms slender clumps of green leaves from which rise rigid, purplish flowering stems, 30 to 40 cm tall. In early summer, they bear numerous small, finely star-shaped flowers in a soft apricot yellow, arranged in light spikes. Not very hardy, this corn lily appreciates very well-drained soil that remains fairly dry after flowering. It can be grown in open ground by the seaside but should be overwintered in a frost-free location in colder regions.

Description

Ixia paniculata ‘Eos’ is a remarkable South African bulbous plant, notable for its delicate apricot-yellow star-shaped flowers borne on slender reddish-purple stems. This corn lily forms small clusters of light flowers with thin petals, standing out above narrow foliage. In mild climates, Ixia paniculata ‘Eos’ reliably returns each year and finds its place in a sunny border. It is also grown in a large container, so it can be sheltered from frost in less favourable climates. This variety is also used in cut flower arrangements.

The Ixia genus comprises geophytes with corms (or "bulbs"), endemic to the Cape regions of South Africa. There, they thrive in prairies and on well-exposed fynbos slopes. The species Ixia paniculata, described in 1766, is more specifically native to the temporarily damp sandy plains of the north-western and south-western Cape. It has borne various names now considered synonyms, including Ixia longiflora, Tritonia paniculata, or Morphixia paniculata.
The cultivar ‘Eos’, named after the Greek goddess of the dawn, is a recent horticultural selection. In late winter, the plant forms a small clump of linear, fine, medium-green leaves, emerging from a buried corm. The flowering stems, very upright and tinged with purple, reach between 30 and 40 cm in height and each bear up to around fifteen star-shaped flowers, 3 to 4 cm in diameter, with 6 petals in a colour ranging from cream to a very soft apricot-yellow. These flowers open from June to July depending on the climate. As with most ixias, the foliage is deciduous: the leaves yellow and then dry after flowering, and the plant enters summer dormancy. Perennial due to its storage organ, the plant is often grown as a bulb to be replanted each spring in cold climates. In light, very well-drained and well-mulched soil, it can withstand light frosts around –5 °C; elsewhere, container cultivation or lifting the corms in autumn is preferred.

In the garden, Ixia paniculata ‘Eos’ is placed at the front of a dry border, in an edging, or on a sheltered terrace, always in full sun and in well-drained soil. It can be paired with the shrubby sages 'California Sunset' (apricot) and 'Gletsjer' (white) and with the very pink clouds of Gaura ‘Crimson Butterflies’. A small ornamental grass like Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Karley Rose’ will add movement and conceal the ixia's absence in summer. In a cut flower arrangement, its stems blend pleasantly with the globular flowers of Allium sphaerocephalon, for light and luminous summer displays.

The species Ixia paniculata is distinguished by a particularly long floral tube, cited as one of the longest in the genus, illustrating the adaptation of these bulbs to long-tongued pollinating insects in the fynbos or South African "garrigue" ecosystems.

Planting and care

Plant the Ixia paniculata Eos bulbs preferably in autumn, in groups of 8 or 10 arranged in a staggered pattern, in a mixture of sand, leaf mould and ordinary soil. The substrate should be permeable and light, but fertile.
Planting in open ground in autumn is only possible in our regions with mild winters, by sheltering the bed under a thick layer of dry leaves.
For planting in pots, use the same substrate, adding crushed horn to support the flowering. Place the pots away from frost and winter rains. As soon as the shoots appear, place the pots in a bright and minimally heated room. Once frost is no longer a concern, place your containers outside, in the sun. At the first summer warmth, water more abundantly to support the flowering. After flowering, the bulbs should be kept dry until autumn.
