More information

The bicolour Asiatic lily, 'Tribal Dance', offers large, star-shaped creamy yellow flowers washed with apricot, marked with an intensely speckled deep purple-red heart. This vigorous bulb quickly forms a dense clump 80 cm to 1 m tall, adorned with dark green, narrow, glossy foliage. The flowering, in early summer, is abundant at the top of each stem. Very hardy and reliable, this lily is equally suitable for borders and large containers and makes excellent cut flowers.

Description

The Lilium ‘Tribal Dance’ is a spectacular Asiatic lily with large, star-shaped, tricolour flowers that light up the garden in early summer. Each flower features a raspberry-red, densely speckled, almost black centre, set against a broad, bright yellow zone, with rosy-apricot tips. Borne on tall, sturdy stems, these upright flowers are noticeable from afar. They bring an exotic touch to a flower border and are outstanding in floral displays.

A perennial bulb from the Liliaceae family, Lilium ‘Tribal Dance’ belongs to the horticultural group of Asiatic lilies, renowned for their early flowering, their very varied colours and their robust growth. This cultivar, of the "Tango" type with a heavily spotted centre, was created by Dutch breeder Mart van den Berg and registered in 2014 by Lily Company B.V. Its upright stems, well furnished with foliage, bear linear, dark green leafes, 10 to 15 cm long. Each stem produces 5 to 7 large, single flowers, 14 to 15 cm in diameter, with smooth, slightly recurved petals, very densely speckled towards the centre of the corolla. Flowering occurs from June to July, sometimes until early August. Very hardy and long-lived, the bulb remains in place for several years and eventually forms a generous clump.
Lilies, many of which originate from temperate Asia, have been cultivated in gardens for centuries and already adorned coats of arms and bouquets during the European Renaissance.

In the garden, the ‘Tribal Dance’ lily is used in small groups of 5 to 7 bulbs in the medium of a border, combined with fine, small ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Piglet'. To extend the flowering period of your border, add ivory daylilies with green hearts, 'Gentle Shepherd', and coneflowers in warm tones, ‘Hot Papaya’. In a border, a few clumps of lady's mantle will soften the overall effect. In a vase, this lily is superb with dahlias ‘Black Hero’ and a few umbels of Ammi majus.

Planting and care

The 'Tribal Dance' lily is not fussy about soil, provided it is well-drained and not excessively chalky or acidic. It appreciates rich, light soils. Plant it in full sun, with its base in the shade, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf mould. Surround them with a pocket of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks, while also allowing them to swell more easily. Mark the planting location, as growth only begins in April. If red insects appear, treat immediately; these are lily beetles whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand; be careful, they drop as soon as they are touched, so place a box underneath.

On the terrace, you can create magnificent pot displays with lilies. Choose a container that is wide and deep enough (at least 16 cm in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf mould and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm apart, then water thoroughly. Place the pots in a cool room, or outdoors once the frosts have passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C. When the shoots appear, move the pot to a conservatory or a very bright room, at a temperature of around 18°C. Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
