Description

Pale Oxeye Daisy, known as Leucanthemum pallens and Pale Marguerite, is a tall herbaceous perennial with single snowy white daisies with sun-yellow centres.

This Leucanthemum is native to a large Mediterranean region. It can be found in dry meadows in the south of France, Italy, and Spain.

The variety 'Summer Sparkler' has a beautiful flowering from June to August, with a variable size of flowers (generally ranging between 4 and 7 cm (2 and 3in) in diameter). The heads are composed of a collar of very spatulate snowy white florets around a sun-yellow centre. Unlike other daisies, its bracts are completely green and not bordered in black. The deciduous leaves are glossy green and deeply toothed, and the plant is bushy, standing 70 cm (28in) tall but with few branches.

It is easy to grow, will thrive in neutral, moist soil and won't mind slightly acidic or chalky soils. It is a lovely, natural variety of daisy which will bring purity and freshness to summer flowerbeds. It will be delightful in white compositions alongside its South African companions Arctotis or Gerbera, which will provide a colourful contrast in a country garden. It is also excellent for cut flowers, providing a long-lasting and beautiful display.

Planting and care

Sow under glass in March or April. The seedlings will emerge after about 16 days. Thin out and then transplant when they are strong enough to handle. You can also plant them outdoors from April to June if the soil is sufficiently warmed up and the ambient temperatures have reached 18°C (64.4°F). Space them 30 cm (12in) apart. Divide the plants in late summer. Protect the young plants from slugs and snails and cut back the withered stems in autumn.
