Description

Clarkia Apple Blossom (Latin name: Clarkia unguiculata Apple Blossom) is an annual plant with a tall habit (1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) in height) whose long stems bear dark green lanceolate leaves. The stems have a pyramidal habit and bloom for four weeks in summer. To fully enjoy the flowering from June to September, it must be sown in staggered intervals from March to June.

Native to rocky soils in California, Clarkia is not demanding and tolerates poor, slightly acidic and dry soil. Overly rich soil would cause it to produce more foliage rather than flowers. However, it prefers sunny locations where it will give its best flowering display.

Although its primary purpose is mass planting, the elegant flowering of the Clarkia, which earned it the name Clarkia elegans in Latin, allows you to create beautiful summer bouquets.

Its double flowers, in the shape of a wide funnel, with crumpled pink petals, appear so delicate that they are called "satin flowers".

Clarkia unguiculata Apple Blossom should not be confused with its cousin, Clarkia amoena, commonly known as Farewell to Spring.

An ecological gesture: throughout summer, the nectar-rich flowers of Clarkias attract pollinating insects to your garden. A good way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and vegetable patch.

Planting and care

Sow Clarkia from March to June directly in place. Cover the seeds with 0.5 cm (0.2 in) of fine soil, gently press down and water thoroughly with a fine shower. Be patient as germination can be irregular over time. Seedlings will emerge in approximately 1 month. Once the young plants reach a height of 5 cm (2 in), thin out the ranks, keeping only one plant every 15 cm (5.9 in). Choose a location that receives ample sunlight.

Regularly remove faded flowers to promote the renewal of flowering.
