Description

Epimedium davidii, also known as David's Epimedium, is a fairy flower which is fairly rare in cultivation and comes to us from the mountainous forests of China. In spring, its yellow columbine flowers appear, perfectly highlighted by foliage which is almost mahogany, at that time of year. This rhizomatous perennial forms small, slightly creeping clumps in shaded and cool areas, in humus-rich soil.

Epimedium davidii (Synonym: Epimedium membranaceum) belongs to the berberidaceae family, first arriving in the West with Epimedium acuminatum of this "new wave" of Chinese species, this botanical species is native to the Himalayan region of Asia, specifically the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. In nature, it is a resident of forests, shaded rocky areas, and thickets in mountainous regions, between 1400 and 3000 metres (4593 and 9842 feet) above sea level. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with a slightly spreading rhizome, forming a tuft 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) tall when in flower. The leathery to papery leaves are composed of 3 to 5 heart-shaped leaflets with barely toothed margins, measuring 6 to 12 cm (2 to 5in) long and 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) wide. They are wine-red when young and then bright green and colour again in autumn before disappearing. Flowering is in April-May with numerous thin, hairy, reddish stems emerging from the tuft. The pendulous flowers resemble columbines in shape. Each floral stem bears a panicle composed of 6 to 24 flowers. Each light yellow flower, measuring 2 to 3 cm (1in) in diameter, is composed of 4 oval outer sepals, 4 reddish inner sepals, and 4 large petals with a spur. The foliage is often damaged by winter and is almost completely brown in early spring.

Small undershrubs with evergreen foliage or deciduous perennials with delicate flowers. These very beautiful shade plants can be grown in a border or a large shaded rock garden, preferably along a path to fully enjoy their great beauty. All Epimediums tolerate temperatures down to -12°C (10.4°F), -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. Western species that are very cold-resistant tolerate difficult conditions, such as living in dense shade under trees, in very dry soil, or in wet clay soil. Asian species, such as Epimedium davidii, prefer a soil that remains moist to wet in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, without limestone, and also tolerate dense shade. All grow relatively slowly but live for many years without any special care.
