Description

This Kerria japonica duo will brighten up your garden in spring. The Japanese Kerria is a deciduous, vigorous shrub with a flexible habit, prized for its bright yellow flowers and beautiful apple-green foliage. Their flowering extends from late March to May, offering an explosion of colours as soon as the first sunny days arrive. These hardy and easy-to-grow shrubs thrive in full sun or partial shade, in well-drained soil.

The duo consists of:

1 Kerria Japonica 'Pleniflora': this variety reaches a height of 1.5m to 2m with a similar spread. Its double, pompom-like flowers are a deep yellow. It blooms abundantly in spring, starting from March.

1 Kerria Japonica 'Golden Guinea': with large, single, golden yellow flowers measuring 5cm in diameter, this variety reaches a height and width of 1.8m to 2m. Its tender green foliage enhances its numerous flowers, which appear in April-May.

Plant these Kerrias from February to April or from October to November to facilitate establishment. You can plant them in well-drained soil in a sunny (but not scorching) or partially shaded location. Maintain a distance of 1m between each plant.

These two Japanese Kerrias can be used in borders and as informal hedges. They pair wonderfully with a white Japanese quince, such as the variety 'Jet Trail', as well as with 'Concha' ceanothus. To extend the flowering period of your border or hedge, add an 'Alexandra' weigela for the summer and an evergreen Mexican orange blossom, which blooms again in September. Add some 'Blue Shades' anemones in front of these shrubs to complete the scene.

Planting and care

Kerria Japonica can be planted from October to April-May, excluding frost. Plant in full sun or partial shade in a rich, well-loosened, and well-drained soil. A mixture of garden soil and planting compost will work very well. Dig a hole 60 cm wide and deep and position the plant, then cover the base with soil and lightly compact. Water lightly. Kerria Japonica is hardy and easy to grow.

It is important to thin out the branches after flowering to avoid an overly dense appearance. Prune after flowering and remove old wood to promote flowering the following year.

Beware of slugs and snails that attack young spring leaves.
