The 'Titan' extra-tall Giant Sunflower is a variety of Helianthus annuus that is particularly tall and has enormous flowers. It is an improvement on the 'Uniflorus Giganteus' variety. This annual plant grows very quickly and has thick, strong stems that reach a height of 3.50m (11ft). Its flower reaches a diameter of 40cm (16in). Titan seeds are the largest and are edible.
Helianthus annuus is known by various names, including Sunflower, Helianthus, and Sun. Before flowering, the plant optimizes its growth by following the sun's path. This phenomenon, called heliotropism, has given rise to some of its common names. The Sunflower belongs to the Asteraceae family. This large annual plant has a controversial origin, but it is native to the American continent. Its flower resembles a giant daisy. Its flowering inevitably attracts the attention of neighbours and visitors. The flowers are compound heads with a corolla of golden yellow petals surrounding an orange and brown centre. The 'Titan extra-tall' variety reaches a height of 3.50m (11ft). It produces an enormous flower with a diameter of 40cm (16in). This magnificent flowering spreads from July to September. The leaves, which are 10-30cm (4-12in) long, heart-shaped, and toothed, are a medium green colour.
The 'Titan' extra-tall Giant Sunflower can be sown directly in place, preferably at the back of a border. We recommend staggering your sowings to enjoy beautiful, young flowers regularly until autumn. It towers over other plants and flowers and catches the eye; it enjoys the company of tall grasses and wild plants. Sunflowers love sunny locations and rich, fresh soil.
Sunflowers in the kitchen:
The buds, petals, and seeds are edible. Add some petals to a green salad for color contrast and their nutty flavour. The green buds can be blanched, then sautéed in garlic butter. Their flavour is similar to that of Jerusalem artichokes. The flesh of the seed can be eaten raw or roasted.
An ecological asset:
Throughout the summer, the melliferous flowers of Sunflowers attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. It's a great way to improve your garden's ecosystem and promote fruit and vegetable production in your vegetable patch.
The oil-rich seeds are particularly appreciated by birds (Parrots, Tits, Goldfinches...). At the end of flowering, harvest them to make some happy during the winter scarcity.

The Sunflower can be sown:
either in March-April, in pots under shelter, to prepare young plants that can be placed in your flower beds after the last frost.
Or from May to June, after the frost, directly in place. In a sunny spot in your garden. In order to enjoy beautiful fresh flowers throughout the season, we recommend staggering your sowings as much as possible.
Sow the Sunflower from March to April in pots. Sow your seeds in groups of 2 at a depth of 1cm (0.5in). Use a good quality compost that you will sift on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, gently press down the compost with a board. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost or vermiculite on top, gently press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your pots in the light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20°C (68°F) to 25°C (77°F). Lower the temperature at night to 17°C (62.6°F) to create a beneficial alternation for germination. The seeds will take 21 days to germinate. Keep the compost moist, but not excessively during growth.
20 days after the young plants appear, remove the weakest shoot to keep only one per pot.
15 days before their final planting, start gradually acclimatizing them to a temperature of 15°C (59°F). At the end of May or beginning of June, the temperature will be warm enough in the garden to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 1m (3ft) apart.
The Sunflower's vigorous growth will require regular watering. When the plant reaches about 1m (3ft), watering can be stopped and it can rely on rainfall even if it is scarce.
It takes 75 to 80 days between sowing and flowering.
Protect your seedlings from attacks by snails and slugs that are fond of these young plants. By sowing chives near your sunflowers, you will keep aphids away from settling in.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
