Gorgeous contrast of colours! The seeds have all sprouted, plenty of branching, flowers that seem to never end. I highly recommend it.

Description

Helianthus annuus, or Garden Sunflower is an annual plant with rapid growth and strong branching stems that can reach up to 1.80m (3.3ft) in height, making it ideal for flowering in the back of flower beds.

Its tricoloured flowers resemble giant daisies (15 to 20cm (5.9 - 7.9in) in diameter). Their brown, almost black centre is surrounded by a triple row of red-mahogany petals with yellow tips.
A single branch provides enough flowers to create a splendid summer bouquet. (Producing little pollen, the flowers will not stain your furniture.)
This impressive flowering period extends from July to October.

Until it starts flowering, the plant optimizes its growth by following the sun's path. This phenomenon, called heliotropism, has given rise to some of its common names: Heliotrope, Sunflower, Garden Sunflower, Sunflower...

Ecologically speaking:

The melliferous flowers will attract butterflies and pollinating insects to your garden.

The oil-rich seeds are particularly appreciated by birds (Parrots, Tits...). At the end of the flowering period, harvest them to bring happiness during the winter scarcity.

Planting and care

The Sunflower can be sown: either in March-April, in pots under shelters, for the preparation of young plants that can be planted in your flower beds after the last frosts. Or from April to June, after the frosts, directly in place. In a sunny spot in your garden. Sow your seeds in groups of 2 at a depth of 1cm (0.4in) and spaced 50cm (19.7in) apart. After 20 days, remove the weakest shoot to keep only one per location. The strong growth of the Sunflower will require regular watering. When the plant reaches about 1.50m (3.3ft), watering can be stopped and it can rely on rainfall, even if it is scarce. Protect your seedlings from attacks by snails and slugs, which are fond of these young plants.
