Some rare Hebe or shrubby veronicas feature variegated foliage, splashed with cream white, purple, or finely marginate with pink. These colour mixes give these varieties a unique character and plenty of brightness. Moreover, the sun intensifies the hues of these leaves, combining at least two different shades. Their purple, pink, or white spikes stand out beautifully against these subtly coloured dresses, revealing their delicacy upon blooming. Hebes are evergreen and will make a lovely impact in the garden all year round. With discreet variegations or multicoloured reflections, here is a selection of our variegated shrubby veronicas to grow in the garden or in pots, on the terrace or balcony depending on your climate, as they are relatively not very hardy.

Hebe ‘Celebration’

Hebe ‘Celebration’ displays beautiful elegance and charms us with its slender, glossy, dark green leaves, irregularly marked with cream and edged with pink. This variety is a lovely hybrid derived from Hebe ‘Wiri Charm’, an old and very floriferous cultivar of shrubby Veronica. Its very bright foliage invites itself into rockeries, borders, or large pots on the terrace to create interesting contrasts. Additionally, it rewards us with a superb and long flowering period that adds even more brightness as its magenta pink flower spikes renew from July to September-October without interruption.

It also has another advantage: its spreading habit—about 1.10 m—makes it a perfect candidate to enhance a composition. It allows for the creation of stunning clumps in dry borders. It forms a harmonious and airy dome, with a medium height of 80-90 cm. Like other Hebe, it thrives in full sun, in perfectly drained, even dry soil. However, in the gardens of southern France, it tolerates partial shade without any issues. Hardy down to -10°C, you can adopt it on the terrace or in the ground in a seaside garden. Its summer flowering will echo that of a Buddleia davidii ‘Santana’, which is also distinguished by beautiful variegated foliage, green marginate with yellow.

Hebe 'Heartbreaker'

‘Heartbreaker’ is a truly stunning variety for the magic of its vibrant colours and the beautiful multicoloured effect it displays. In every season, its foliage bursts forth in a festival of colours as changeable as a painter’s palette. From green tinged with purple and cream-white on the margins in summer, the leaves become more intensely crimson with the cold. With its warm hues, it is one of the most colourful varieties, ensuring an interesting presence in the garden even in winter. From May to July, this bush blooms in light purple, a delight with its floral spikes in coordinated shades. A true little gem in subtle tones, its charm is enhanced by its small size, as it will not exceed 60 cm in height in all directions once mature. Like other shrubby veronicas, this variety enjoys full sun and tolerates drought. To accompany it, whether in the ground or in a pot, consider pairing it with other tender shrubs like the Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’, a form of Mimosa with superbly coloured lilac-purple foliage.

Hebe 'Tip Top'

Another variety of Hebe or shrubby veronica that stands out with its original variegated foliage, showcasing a sumptuous tricolour robe. Each leaf of Hebe ‘Tip Top’ is a marvel. The white-cream centre of the lamina is adorned with a silver-green stroke as if touched by a brush, while the entire edge of the leaf is lined with a fine purplish-pink margin. It bears fairly round leaves infused with purple in the juvenile stage. In June-July, it reveals its splendour even more as it adorns itself with slender but very abundant spikes of pale pink flowers. It forms a beautiful, colourful ball of about 40 cm in all directions, with compact dimensions that naturally lend it to the decoration of terraces and balconies. Adopt it to create a scene with unreal hues when mixed with summer heathers in similar colours such as ‘Dark Beauty’ or white ones like Calluna vulgaris ‘Alba’.

Hebe 'Jewel of the Nile'®

Here is a hybrid shrubby veronica that enchants us with its changing and beautifully coloured attire throughout the seasons. Hebe ‘Jewel of the Nile’® is adorned with long evergreen leaves, whose lamina is painted green in the centre and marginate with bright yellow in summer. In winter, they blush pink at the edges due to the cold. In June, this variegated foliage is enhanced by floral spikes of intense bright pink. Compact and dense, this variety forms a beautiful cushion with a neat appearance of approximately 60 cm in all directions and is therefore perfect for small spaces, decorating them all year round. Planted in the ground or in pots, it brings brightness and originality to small sunny gardens, terraces, or balconies. Hardy down to -15°C in well-drained soil, it is one of the most cold-resistant varieties, making it easy to grow in gardens in our regions where winters are not too harsh.

Hebe 'Leopard Spot'®

With Hebe ‘Leopard Spot’®, it is the heart of the leaves that is tinted yellow rather than their edges. The centre is ivory white, which accentuates the contrast between green and yellow when the margins are irregularly touched with green spots. The glossy coat of this shrubby veronica is simply unprecedented, giving it a unique appearance! The bright pink flowering in June enhances this contrasting outfit. It forms a regular, very compact and upright ball of light, not exceeding 40 cm in all directions. Relatively hardy down to -10°C, it is not demanding regarding soil type and is water-efficient, making it suitable for planting in the ground in gardens with a mild climate, or in a lovely pot if you live north of the Loire, so it can be sheltered from frost.
