Description

The 'Annapurna' Standard Rose showcases this exceptional variety, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful white roses. Bearing the name of the most challenging peak in the Himalayas, it is a majestic plant with its large modern white roses sparkling like snow and powerfully fragrant. They emit a violet scent and fade with great elegance in immaculate white. Its fragrance, vigour, and long flowering period have earned it 12 major awards in international competitions—a highly desirable plant, both in the garden or on the terrace and in bouquets.

Standard roses are created by grafting a specific variety (such as the bush Poséidon) onto an upright stem of a different rose, namely Rosa canina, R. laxa, or R. multiflora. In regions with very low temperatures, protecting the rootstock during the winter may be necessary.

The 'Annapurna' or 'dorblan' Rose is a beautiful French creation by François Dorieux, born with the new millennium. This rose is classified as a Tea hybrid and remains one of the best modern varieties with large white flowers. Grafted as a standard rose, it has a characteristic habit and will reach approximately 1.70m (6ft) in height with a spread of 90cm (35in) to 1m (3ft) at the neck. From May-June until very late in the season, on healthy, dark green, matte foliage, elongated and turbinate buds appear in successive waves, opening into fully bloomed roses measuring 9cm (4in) in diameter. Their imperfect form at full bloom is reminiscent of English roses. They comprise over 40 thick, waxy, white petals and are solitary on long, sturdy stems. Their highly pronounced and remarkable fragrance is original. This hardy variety is also suitable for warm regions. The deciduous foliage falls in autumn and reappears in spring.

This 'Annapurna' Standard Rose will find its place in the centre of a large rose bed as a focal point in a well-maintained garden, in a row along a path, or even in a container on the terrace. Its pure white colour is easy to combine; for example, it can be paired with white Phlox paniculata, pink Penstemon, daisies, pale pink roses, or yellow tones. At its base, it can be accompanied by Nepeta mussinii, lovely and easy-to-grow plants such as perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves... Its flowers can be used to create sumptuous bouquets that delicately perfume the home.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.

If you live in an area with very cold winters, protect the graft of standard roses (the "trunk") by wrapping it with a thick winter cover.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
