Description

The Rose 'Pernille Poulsen' is a Danish creation dating back to 1965. This variety has not lost any of its charm or liveliness. From June to October, it forms a small ever-flowering bush, covered in clusters of semi-double roses in a beautiful vibrant pink with a golden stamen heart. It is a very perpetual and highly fragrant floribunda with a natural, hardy, and easy-to-grow habit. It thrives in all gardens. Without a doubt, it is a gem that will continue to bring joy to many gardeners.

Rosa floribunda 'Pernille Poulsen' is one of the masterpieces created by Danish rose breeder Poulsen. It was obtained by cross-breeding 'Ma Perkins' and 'Ancolie'. It forms a small bush of 60 cm (24in) in all directions, highly branched, vigorous yet flexible, and covered in very healthy foliage, dark green with a slight gloss. Its flowering period is remarkably long, lasting 5 to 6 months. This bush constantly produces waves of semi-double corollas, 5 cm (2in) in diameter, grouped in terminal clusters. The tightly closed buds open into turbinate flowers, then transform into roses with a more relaxed appearance and a delightful fragrance. The exact hue of the flowers is a medium vibrant pink, nuanced with warm orange highlights, with some touches of light pink.

Floribunda roses are ideal for creating beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the edge of the terrace or in small shrub beds. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They are great companions for paniculate phlox and tall baby's breath. The modest size of 'Pernille Poulsen' makes it an interesting variety for growing in large pots.

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
