Description

Dahlia ‘Karma Purple Corona’ is a cactus or semi-cactus dahlia in a purple-violet shade, bred for cut flowers. It is highly prized for its large, exotic-looking blooms with a very rich colour. Its inflorescences make a beautiful statement in the garden as well as in cut flower arrangements, in a very contemporary style. It is also distinguished by its long, rigid stems and its excellent vase life. In a border, ‘Karma Purple Corona’ introduces an intensely sophisticated note.

Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae family and originate from Mexican species. They are non-hardy perennials with tuberous roots, which above-ground parts die back in winter. Their stump is formed of fleshy tubercles which must be protected from the cold in winter.
Dahlia ‘Karma Purple Corona’ is a mutation of the variety ‘Karma Corona’. It is part of the Karma collection, a line of dahlias carefully selected by the Verwer brothers in the Netherlands for professional cut flower production. The Karma dahlias are renowned for their robust stems and long-lasting blooms once cut. This cultivar is officially classified among the cactus dahlias: its flowers are double, formed of narrow, rolled, pointed, slightly recurved "petals", which create a dense, bristly star. Its inflorescences reach 13-14 cm in diameter. Their colour is described as violet to reddish-purple: a deep, saturated violet tone, with reddish-purple highlights and an almost velvety texture. The plant forms an upright clump approximately 90 cm in height, with an erect habit. The sturdy stems support the weight of the flowers without drooping. The foliage, formed of the typical divided leaves of dahlias, creates a dense mass of beautiful dark green.

Dahlia ‘Karma Purple Corona’ has a theatrical style; its graphic form deserves companions of character. In a border, you can pair it with the bluish hues of Dahlia ‘Karma Lagoon’ or the deep red of ‘Sam Hopkins’. Add a few stems of Dahlia ‘Honka Fragile’ to lighten the overall effect. The dark plumes of Purple Common Millet or the soft spikes of Amaranth ‘Velvet Curtains’ will create a large, florist-style cut flower arrangement directly in the garden. In a vase, all these varieties combine to make armfuls of chic, bold violet, where ‘Karma Purple Corona’ is the star, enhanced by fine textures and rich colours.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Karma Purple Corona' is easy to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in full sun after the last frosts; rich, cool, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would encourage the tubercles to rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to fill in without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once, then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw for protection.

Tall Dahlias, with hollow stems, do not withstand wind or heavy rain well. To overcome this drawback, you can stake them, but, you must admit, it is not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you thus duct the influx of sap to a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
