More information

This variety is distinguished by its large, intensely ruffled flowers in shades of yellow to apricot, which illuminate the garden from July until the first frosts. Rather compact, it is suitable for adorning borders and for container cultivation. Its flowers are equally extraordinary in cut flower arrangements.

Description

The Dahlia 'Mingus Joshua' is rather unclassifiable. Its flowers, shaped like large, frizzy pom-poms, unfurl in a gradation of yellow and apricot. Not too tall, but very floriferous from summer to autumn, this variety fits just as well at the front of a border as in a large exotic cut flower arrangement.

Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae family and are native to Mexico and Central America. Cultivated since the time of the Aztecs for their tuberous roots, they have become garden stars. The cultivar 'Mingus Joshua' is a non-hardy perennial: the tubers are planted in spring after the frosts and are dug up or protected before winter. Horticulturally, it belongs to the 'fimbriata' dahlia group—characterised by double flowers which ligulate florets are notched or divided at their tip, giving it this "ruffled" appearance. It was introduced in the United States in 2001 by breeder Robert Mingus and is part of the "Mingus" series, known for its robust and colourful varieties. The plant forms a bushy clump 0.5 to 1 m in height depending on conditions and up to about 0.5 m in spread. The flowers have a diameter of 15 to 20 cm. They display a multitude of "petals" from sun yellow to apricot, slightly more orange towards the outside. The foliage is dark green, the stems are sturdy, although staking can be useful in windy sites. Flowering begins in July and continues until the frosts (October, or even November).

With its large, sunny "pom-pom" flowers, this dahlia fits into an exotic meadow atmosphere or a contemporary border. Pair it with the fine foliage of bronze fennel and the chocolate cosmos 'Cocamocha'. Create a sumptuous colour gradation with other dahlias of the same style, for example the creamy white 'Tsuki Yori no Shisha' and the rich orange 'Mel's Orange'. In a vase, its stems allow you to compose a luminous two-tone yellow/apricot cut flower arrangement, accented with purple foliage such as that of Pittosporum 'Tom Thumb'. Let it express itself in the sun, and give it a little space to breathe: its personality stands on its own.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Mingus Joshua' is easy to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in full sun after the last frosts; rich, cool, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would encourage tubercle rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to backfill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once, then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw as protection.

Tall Dahlias, with hollow stems, do not withstand wind or heavy rain well. To overcome this drawback, you can stake them, but, you must agree, it is not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you thus duct the influx of sap to a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
