Description

The Dahlia 'Japlou' stands out with its medium-sized, double flowers in warm, non-aggressive tones, very bright both in the garden and in a vase. Of good stature, it is suitable for summer borders and for making cut flower arrangements. Its long stems are sturdy and it flowers for four months, from summer until the frosts. Its bicolour flower, yellow-orange with a red reverse, is superb with large late-summer perennials.

The genus Dahlia (family Asteraceae) is native to the Mexican highlands and Central America. 'Japlou' is a horticultural cultivar from the Decorative group. It is a plant with fleshy tuberous roots that forms new tubercles around the collar each year. It forms a bushy, upright clump with rapid growth. This variety reaches 1 m to 1.20 m in height with a 50 to 60 cm spread within a single season. The stems, often hollow in dahlias, require staking if the location is exposed. The inflorescences are fully double heads: their central disc is not visible, the ligules (or petals) are wide and slightly involute for less than three-quarters of their length. In 'Japlou', the flowers measure between 11-13 cm in diameter, up to 15 cm depending on growing conditions. This places it in the category of "Small-flowered Decoratives". The upper surface of the ligules is yellow to yellow-orange, while their reverse turns to deep orange, even red. Flowering lasts from July to October, until November in a mild climate, provided the faded heads are regularly removed.

Plant the Dahlia Japlou at the back of a large border or in the centre of a sunny bed. Provide a discreet stake to support its stems and regularly cut off its faded flowers. Its colouring pairs well with the blue and purple tones of woodland sages (Salvia nemorosa) and Agastache 'Blue Fortune', mixed with ornamental grasses like Panicum 'Cheyenne' or Pennisetum x advena 'Rubrum' and pastel echinaceas. In a dahlia bouquet, pair it with Peace Pact (cream), Davos (bicolour red/white) or Bishop of Llandaff (single red with purplish foliage) and tall mauve asters like 'Marie Ballard'.

Planting and care

The decorative Dahlia 'Japlou' is easy to grow in all regions. Here are a few simple rules to follow to enjoy its beautiful and generous flowering. Plant the tubercles in the sun after the last frosts. A rich, cool, and well-drained soil will be greatly appreciated. Avoid any stagnant moisture which promotes tubercle rot. Amend your soil with compost (in case of poor soil) and sand (for drainage) if necessary. Work your soil deeply and enrich it with ground horn or dehydrated blood, as you prefer. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well around it to fill any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. Water generously at planting and then regularly for the first six weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, which is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry, so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your tubercles in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a thick mulch (leaves, straw...).

Pinch the stems early (from the 3rd or 4th week after planting) to make your dahlia more compact and ramified and therefore more resistant to bad weather (wind, rain). To do this, cut the terminal shoots with your nails just above the previous leaves. Otherwise, you always have the option of staking, but the aesthetic result is not necessarily in the best taste.

Slugs and snails are very fond of these young shoots. Protect them!
