Description

The Dahlia 'Icoon' is a variety with spherical flowers classified as pompons. The yellow ligules pointed with ruby have a very beautiful solar and warm effect that will accompany wonderfully your summer flowering beds and brighten up the autumn.

Dahlias belong to the large family of asteraceae, they are originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. At present, the approximately 20,000 horticultural varieties obtained by humans have invaded, to our greatest pleasure, gardens all over the world. Dahlia varieties are classified according to the shape of their heads. In the group of pompom Dahlias, the heads form an almost perfect sphere and the strongly concave ligules overlap in numerous revolute (incurved upwards) rows. Viewed from above, the pompom seems to be made up of alveoli. In 'Icoon', the spheres measure 7 to 8 cm (3in) in diameter. They are golden yellow with ruby tips. Before the end of the anthesis, the shorter central florets form a tight ruby-coloured bud.

The Dahlia 'Icoon' reaches 100 cm (39in) in height and 70 in width. Its very branched stems are hollow and its leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 very denticulate leaflets. The plant has a bushy habit and, as a tall variety, care should be taken to broaden its width to strengthen it or stake it.
The flowering of Dahlias is exceptionally long, starting in July and ending in October. To encourage floral re-growth and extend this flowering period, be sure to remove faded flowers. Even better, cut them regularly to create attractive colorful bouquets by combining different varieties.
Dahlias are easy to grow but require some work as the tubers need to be stored in winter. The yellow colour of the 'Icoon' variety will go well with the orangish pink of the 'Eccentric' Coneflower or the violet blue of the 'Purple Rain' Sage for example. Accompanied by grasses with a light appearance, Dahlias also provide an opportunity to create charming autumn scenes that will prolong the pleasure of flowering beds before the arrival of winter.

Planting and care

The 'Icoon' Dahlia is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubers in a sunny location after the last frost, rich, fresh, and well-drained soil is perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water abundantly once and then regularly renew this watering for the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be wintered. In November, the first frost turns the foliage black, that's the moment to dig them up. Carefully remove the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a box on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic, for example. In regions in the South, close to the coast, where there are only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a carpet of leaves or straw for protection. This large Dahlia, with its hollow stems, does not withstand wind or heavy rain well. To overcome this inconvenience, you can stake it, but let's admit, it's not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread out the plant's habit, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you channel the flow of sap to a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
