The Giant Dahlias are known for their enormous flowers, measuring 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12in) in diameter, with various shapes and colours, ranging from the subtle shades of 'Café au Lait' to the intense red of 'Spartacus', and the frilly bicolour of the dahlia 'Myrtle's Folly', as well as their height: their tall stems can reach up to 2m (7ft)! Majestic in appearance, they create a spectacular backdrop in a light perennial border or vegetable garden. Staking is often necessary. The British refer to them as "Dinner-plate dahlias" because their size is similar to that of a dinner plate, and they cultivate them for competitions for the largest flower!
