The dahlias didn't come back, no shoots, so no flowers on the horizon... what a shame.

Description

The Dahlia 'Kenora Macop-B' is a variety of Giant Cactus Dahlia. The impressive flowers have curly dark red and almost black petals in the center and bloom from July to October.

This perennial has tuberous roots that are swollen. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stalks, 1.30m (4ft) tall, are topped with pointed and frizzy ligulate flowers, measuring 22cm (9in) in diameter, in a chocolate red colour.

The Dahlia 'Kenora Macop-B' grows in rich, clayey but healthy soil, thoroughly worked in depth in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor and sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Kenora Macop-B' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the spring in deeply worked soil enriched, for example, with blood, fish and bone. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, pour one litre of water. Water regularly for the first six weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold. They need to be overwintered. In November, the first frost will blacken the foliage, which is the time to remove them. Carefully dig up the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tuber can replenish its reserves. Cut the stems 10 cm (4in) from the tuber when the foliage is dry. Spread your bulbs in a box of newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place.
