Description

The 'Striped Emory Paul' Dahlia is a variety of giant decorative dahlia with pink flowers striped with dark pink introduced in 1962 that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems, 100cm (39in) tall, are topped with flowers with wide, flat, rather incurved ligules, 27cm (11in) in diameter, striped with dark pink.

The 'Striped Emory Paul' Dahlia grows in rich, clay but healthy soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The 'Striped Emory Paul' Dahlia is used in mixed flower beds or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Striped Emory Paul' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place, avoiding excessive humidity. Transplant in early May, once the risk of frost has passed.
