I had bought it a few years ago and I had missed it. I got it again in 2022 and I made the right choice. It is splendid, the photos are very accurate here, with a soft pink colour and apricot-coloured petal base, huge and all curly. It produces plenty of tubers that make it easy to store from one year to the next. In short, I love it.

Description

Dahlia 'Islander' is a variety of giant dahlia with large salmon-pink and orange flowers. It blooms from July to October, illuminating your garden all summer with its height and brilliant colour.

This perennial has tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, carrying compound, odd-pinnate leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems, 90 to 120cm (35 to 47in) tall, are topped with flowers with wide, flattened, rather incurved ligules, 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) in diameter. The flowers boast beautiful salmon-pink and orange tones.

Dahlia 'Islander' grows in deeply worked, rich, clayey but well-drained soil. It likes warm and sunny locations, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Islander' is perfect in mixed flower beds with other varieties. The flowers also make beautiful bouquets.

Tips: when planting, consider its dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Islander' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide support stakes and tie the young stems loosely. Add slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
