Description

The Dahlia 'Madame Antoinette' (Decorative) is characterised by its perfectly round flower heads, in peach-pink tones with a fuchsia-pink reverse. Of medium stature, standing on sturdy stems, and very floriferous, it is an excellent variety for late summer borders and cut flower arrangements. Its prolonged flowering period enlivens the garden until the first frosts.

Belonging to the Asteraceae family, this cultivar is classified in the group of small-flowered Decorative dahlias, a category in which the ligulate florets (or "petals") are flat or slightly incurved and so numerous that they completely conceal the centre of the head. Horticultural dahlias are complex hybrids derived from Mexican species, and the genus is native to the highlands of Mexico and Central America.
The variety 'Madame Antoinette', registered in 2023, is also circulated under the trade name ‘Hermitage’. The plant has a bushy, upright habit. In one season, it forms a clump 90 cm to 1.20 m tall and 40 to 60 cm wide. The stems, herbaceous and hollow, are firm, green with purplish reflections. They bear bright green foliage, divided into lanceolate leaflets. The root system consists of fleshy tubers which produce new stems from the collar each spring. These tubers, which do not tolerate frost well, must be dug up and overwintered in a cool, dry place. The inflorescences (heads), 10 to 12 cm in diameter, bear rounded, slightly spoon-shaped ligules, peach-apricot on the front, with a more intense pink to fuchsia reverse; the flower buds may show a purplish hue before opening. Flowering lasts from July to October, until the first frosts.

In a border, pair the Dahlia 'Madame Antoinette' with grasses and perennials that flower in late summer: Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’, Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’, Salvia ‘Amistad’ and an autumn aster like ‘Andenken an Alma Pötschke’. To encourage flowering and prolong it, be sure to deadhead spent flowers regularly. Do not hesitate to create cut flower arrangements, playing on the complementary colours and shapes of the flowers. To do this, plant several varieties in the vegetable garden. Undisputed stars of cottage gardens, decorative dahlias pair well with airy-looking cosmos and cleomes.

Planting and care

The decorative Dahlia 'Madame Antoinette' is easy to grow in all regions. Here are a few simple rules to follow to enjoy its beautiful and generous flowering. Plant the tubercles in the sun after the last frosts. A rich, cool, and well-drained soil will be greatly appreciated. Avoid any stagnant moisture which encourages tubercle rot. Amend your soil with compost (in case of poor soil) and sand (for drainage) if necessary. Work your soil deeply and enrich it with ground horn or dehydrated blood, as you prefer. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well around it to fill any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. Water generously at planting and then regularly for the first six weeks to help with root establishment.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, which is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry, so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your tubercles in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic, for example. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a thick mulch (leaves, straw...).

Pinch the stems early (from the 3rd or 4th week after planting) to make your dahlia more compact and ramified and therefore more resistant to bad weather (wind, rain). To do this, cut the terminal shoots with your fingernails just above the previous leaves. Otherwise, you always have the staking option, but the aesthetic result is not necessarily in the best taste.

Slugs and snails are very fond of these young shoots. Protect them!
