Description

The Dahlia Happy Single Wink offers masses of single flowers throughout the summer, with a soft pink colour and a deeper pink centre, highlighted by dark purple-black cut foliage. The plant is compact and well-branched, perfect for the terrace or borders. Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil.

Dahlias, from the asteraceae family, are originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the approximately 20,000 horticultural varieties created by humans have invaded gardens around the world, much to our delight.
The 'Happy Single Wink' variety is a recent variety belonging to the group of dwarf dahlias with single flowers. The plant will not exceed 60 cm (24in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in width. It has a bushy, branched and compact habit, not requiring staking. This variety flowers from July to October. The flower heads measure 8 cm (3in) in diameter and resemble simple corollas composed of a row of soft pink ligules arranged in a collar of pale pink, shaded towards the center with a deep pink halo around a cluster of golden yellow florets. The highly branched stems are hollow and the leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 finely toothed lobes. The leaves and stems are a rare shade of dark purple with black highlights. To encourage continuous flowering and extend the flowering period, be sure to remove faded flowers.

The Happy Single dahlias are adorable dwarf landscape dahlias with vibrant colours. 'Wink' pairs particularly well with cosmos and Lychnis coronaria. It will create colourful spots at the front of borders alongside Echinaceas, Helenies, and white cactus dahlias. Also consider combining it with Pennisetum villosum, a lovely fluffy grass, to add softness and delicacy to the arrangement. This variety is particularly suitable for container gardening to easily adorn the terrace or balcony.

As a star plant for borders and cottage gardens, dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers as well as the humble vegetables. They can be used to create beautiful potted displays or charming bouquets. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. However, its poor taste relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Happy Single Wink' is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is important to follow a few simple rules. Plant the tubers in a sunny location after the last frost, in rich, fresh, and well-drained soil. However, stagnant moisture can cause the tubers to rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it with crushed horn or dehydrated blood, for example. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. After planting, water abundantly once and then regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid in rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frost will blacken the foliage, indicating it's time to dig them up. Carefully remove the tubers, taking off as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a box on newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic, for example. In southern regions, close to the coast and experiencing few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In that case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.
