Description

The Dahlia 'Sturm Sweet Maria' captivates with its pastel gradient evolving from apricot to pink, full of charm and tenderness in the garden as in cut flower arrangements. Vigorous and floriferous from mid-summer to autumn, it is suitable for tall borders, seasonal beds and large containers exposed to the sun.

Belonging to the Asteraceae family, 'Sturm Sweet Maria' is a cultivar classified in the Decorative dahlia group; it features very double flower heads with numerous, slightly incurved ligules. This cultivar was developed in the Netherlands by breeder Frans H. Sturm, in Heinkenszand (Zeeland), and then introduced in Europe around 2021.
The plant grows from a perennial tuberous stump bearing fleshy roots, basal shoots emerge from the collar in spring. The stems, herbaceous and hollow, ramify and bear opposite leaves, of a medium green, with three or more lobes. The clump reaches 90 to 100 cm in height with a spread of 45–60 cm. The flowering, from July to October, offers inflorescences 11–12 cm in diameter: they open apricot to soft yellow, turn salmon then pastel pink, the ligules (or petals) being regularly arranged, with a concealed central disc. The stems are sufficiently long and firm for cutting.

To prolong the flowering until autumn, remove spent flowers as they appear. Do not hesitate to create romantic bouquets with this pastel dahlia 'Sturm Sweet Maria'. Combine several dahlias in a bed or plant several varieties in the kitchen garden. Pair its rosy apricot tones with cream or peach dahlias like 'Café au Lait', 'Break Out', 'Preference' or 'Jowey Winnie'. Add some Cosmos Double 'Click Rose Bonbon', some Ammi majus 'Queen of Africa' or a Chinese fountain grass for movement.

Frans H. Sturm, whose nursery "Zeeland Dahlia" has over fifty years of history, has created numerous cultivars intended for gardens and cut flowers, including 'Sturm Lighthouse', 'Sturm Kika' and 'Sturm Sweet Nicole'.

Planting and care

The decorative Dahlia 'Sturm Sweet Maria' is easy to grow in all regions. Here are a few simple rules to follow to enjoy its beautiful and generous flowering. Plant the tubercles in the sun after the last frosts. A rich, cool, and well-drained soil will be greatly appreciated. Avoid any stagnant moisture which encourages tubercle rot. Amend your soil with compost (in case of poor soil) and sand (for drainage) if necessary. Work your soil deeply and enrich it with ground horn or dehydrated blood, as you prefer. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well around it to fill any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. Water abundantly at planting and then regularly for the first six weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, which is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry, so that the tubercles replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your tubercles in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic, for example. In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a thick mulch (leaves, straw...).

Pinch the stems early (from the 3rd or 4th week after planting) to make your dahlia more compact and ramified and thus more resistant to bad weather (wind, rain). To do this, cut the terminal shoots with your fingernails just above the previous leaves. Otherwise, you always have the option of staking, but the aesthetic result is not necessarily in the best taste.

Slugs and snails are very fond of these young shoots. Protect them!
