Description

The Dahlia ‘Sunlady’ offers large, bright yellow flowers, well-formed and particularly luminous in the garden or in a cut flower arrangement. Its generous and prolonged flowering is a major asset for garden decoration: it catches the eye and structures a flower bed. Its very pure yellow colour allows for refined plant associations and will give cut flower arrangements a beautiful 'sunny' touch.

‘Sunlady’ belongs to the Asteraceae family, like all dahlias. They are perennial plants with tubercles that cannot tolerate frost: in late autumn, the tubercles are harvested and stored dry for the winter, then replanted in spring.
The Dahlia ‘Sunlady’ is part of the so-called "Decorative" dahlias, a horticultural group that includes varieties with double flowers, often round, with wide petals arranged symmetrically and no visible centre. It develops an upright clump, supported by robust and sturdy stems. The plant can reach a height between 80 and 100 cm depending on growing conditions. It has dark green foliage, with broadly dentate and elongated leaves, measuring about 15 to 25 cm long. The flowers of this cultivar are compound of wide "petals" or ligulate florets, arranged to form a very round ball. They measure between 10 and 15 cm in diameter and bloom in a lemon yellow colour, particularly vivid and very pure. Flowering begins in July and continues until the first frosts, provided the flowers are pruned regularly. The foliage is deciduous, meaning the leafy stems die back in winter.

To accompany this dazzling Dahlia 'Sunlady', choose varieties with dark flowers such as 'Hollyhill Black Beauty', a Daylily ‘Stella de Oro’ with more discreet yellow flowers and a sage 'Amistad violet' of a violet-blue. In a vase, its large yellow flowers are superb with the black trumpets of the Calla 'Schwartzwalder'.

Dahlias are exuberant plants that flood flower beds for weeks. While these flowers are perfect for adorning borders, they also know how to add a decorative touch to the vegetable garden. Originating from Mexico, these tuberous plants were first cultivated for their edible roots, but their low culinary value quickly steered them towards purely ornamental use. Since then, their beauty and generosity have continued to captivate new gardening enthusiasts.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Sunlady' is easy to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in a full sun position after the last frosts; rich, cool, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would encourage tubercle rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to backfill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once and then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frost days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw as protection.

This Dahlia, with its hollow stems, is still sensitive to strong winds or heavy rain. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but, you must agree, it is not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you thus duct the influx of sap onto a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
