Description

The Dahlia 'Jowey Frambo' brings a very beautiful raspberry colour to the "Jowey" dahlia collection. It is a ball dahlia cultivar that bears globular flowers arranged in small alveolate cells. The plant flowers from summer to autumn, forming a lovely upright clump supported by sturdy stems. Its flowers have a beautiful presence and last well in a vase.

Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae family and bear inflorescences in heads, which we commonly call "flowers". The wild species, from which modern hybrids originate, are native to the Mexican highlands. These tuberous plants are perennial, but their tubercles must be lifted and stored away from winter conditions.
The cultivar 'Jowey Frambo' is part of the "Jowey" series, resulting from the work of the Belgian breeder Jozef Weyts. The cultivar is also registered under the name 'Hapet Frambo'. It belongs to the horticultural group of ball or pompon dahlias, characterised by a double, spherical flower with short, almost completely rolled petals. This variety reaches a height of 70 to 100 cm and a spread of about 30 to 50 cm. The flowers, with a diameter of 8-9 cm, are perfectly spherical in shape, a raspberry-pink colour sometimes with a coral hue. The foliage is composed of deeply divided leaves, dark green in colour. Flowering extends from July until October, or even November depending on the region.

To encourage repeat flowering, regularly cut off spent flowers and make large, colourful cut flower arrangements by combining it with other varieties. With its perfectly round flowers and raspberry-pink colouring, this 'Jowey Frambo' dahlia has a definite personality. In the garden, pair it with perennials with silvery foliage like Artemisia 'Powis Castle', or with fine grasses to accentuate its roundness. You can also pair it with a pink dahlia like 'Marshmallow Baby'. In a vase, combine it with a white double Japanese anemone 'Whirlwind' and a light copper chrysanthemum 'Herbstbrokat' to make its raspberry colouring stand out.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Jowey Frambo' is easy to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in a full sun position after the last frosts; rich, cool, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would encourage the rotting of the tubercles. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to backfill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once and then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry so that the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw as protection.

This large-sized Dahlia, with its hollow stems and heavy flowers, sometimes withstands wind or heavy rain poorly. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but, you must agree, it is not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you thus channel the influx of sap to a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
