Description

Ordinary marjoram is a perennial but slightly frost-sensitive aromatic plant, grown in open ground or in pots. Sow from March to May and harvest as needed, from May to September. The fresh or dried leaves, with their slightly camphor scent, wonderfully flavor soups and marinades or can be consumed as an infusion.

Marjoram has been used as a condiment since ancient times for its medicinal properties. Highly aromatic, it is particularly suited for dishes with sauce, as well as marinades and pizzas when dried. It can be planted in the vegetable garden, in pots, or as a border plant. Sow in spring, either in a nursery or directly in the ground.

Harvest: You can pick marjoram leaves as needed, starting from May/June. It is best to harvest in the morning to preserve its flavour and aroma.

Storage: This condiment can be perfectly stored fresh in a glass of water or in a plastic bag at the bottom of your refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage (up to a year), dry the harvested marjoram upside down in a well-ventilated place. Then place it in tightly closed jars.

Gardener's tip: Marjoram enjoys the company of chervil.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sowing takes place under cover in March - April or directly in the ground from mid-May. Trace rows 30cm (12in) apart, sow in groups of 4 to 5 seeds spaced 15cm (6in) apart. After germination, thin out to keep only one plant per hole.

Position in the sun. The soil must be well-drained, light, and rather dry. Add a little sand if your soil tends to be clayey.

Cultivation of marjoram:

Mulch marjoram with stones to retain heat. In pots, remove any stagnant water that may accumulate. Regularly weed and harvest to promote the development of new shoots. From the beginning of flowering, cut the plants by two-thirds to obtain a second harvest.

Marjoram does not like the cold. That's why it is often grown in our regions as an annual. In autumn, to keep it longer, mulch the base to protect it from the cold (in regions with mild winters).

Marjoram has good resistance to diseases. However, if the soil is too wet, the roots will rot. Pest insects are few (aphids and red spider mites) and rare.
