Water for birds

We often think about feeding birds to give them a helping hand, especially when it’s cold, but we less frequently consider providing them with water. However, just like humans, water is a vital necessity for birds. It helps them stay hydrated, especially during dry periods, but also allows them to cool off and groom themselves. Here are our tips for safely providing water for our feathered friends.

Water, a vital element for birds

Birds need fresh water to drink, cool off during hot weather, and clean themselves. They take baths to remove small debris or parasites from their feathers. They then smooth their plumage with their beak and coat it with a protective oily liquid.

Some birds, like swallows, also use water to make mud and build their nests with it. Young birds that have recently hatched need even more water than adults.

Providing water for birds can therefore be very beneficial, especially during dry periods and in winter, when it is more difficult for them to find it. However, a few precautions should be taken to ensure that birds can benefit from it without any issues.

In which container should you provide water for birds?

Use a container that is not too deep (3 to 4 cm deep) and not slippery to ensure easy access and prevent birds from drowning. Ideally, you can place water in a terracotta saucer no more than 3 to 4 cm deep. You can also add a flat stone in the middle that emerges from the water, providing a safe perch for the birds, or a branch.

Other possible options include getting a birdbath, either freestanding, hanging, or placed in a high location.

Installing a pond or a water feature is also a good idea. Birds will come to drink, possibly collect water for nest building, and bathe. However, ensure that the walls are not smooth and vertical to prevent birds from drowning. Provide easy access with pebbles, stones, or non-slip, sturdy supports, allowing birds to perch safely and giving them access to shallow water.

You can also place a small fountain for example in your garden, always with the same safety requirements: shallow and non-slip access.

Where to install a water point for birds?

Birds prefer situations where they are calm and sheltered from potential predators, such as cats.

Therefore, install your water points in an open area, where birds can see predators approaching, and preferably at a height.

Place the dish near a potential shelter, such as a small thicket or a bush, where birds can take refuge in case of an attack and perch to smooth their feathers after bathing.

When birds drink, they can be more vulnerable. Remember to place the water points intended for them sheltered from predators

In summer, place the water point in the shade and in winter, in the sun.

If the birds visiting your garden are numerous, multiply the water points to avoid squabbles.

Maintaining water points for birds

It is important to provide clean water for birds and to renew it regularly, if possible every day.

Also, make sure to maintain water sources regularly and clean them to avoid spreading diseases.

Do not add anything to the water, neither salt nor additives.

Precautions to take in winter

In winter, birds also need water, especially if they only feed on seeds, but if they get wet or bathe, they risk freezing. To avoid this inconvenience, you can place a mesh over the saucer in winter. This way, they can drink without the risk of freezing.

Another tip is to position your water source as much as possible in the sun and use lukewarm water to prevent freezing whenever possible.

You can also change the water every morning at a regular time, so they will get into the habit of coming to drink before the water freezes.

By installing a water source, you can enjoy the fabulous spectacle of birds quenching their thirst, refreshing themselves, and bathing, especially during hot weather. So, don’t hesitate!
