Brrr, the cold is back and it will make its presence felt across much of France in the coming days. Nothing really unusual for January... and it helps to kill off pests in the garden!

However, the last few winters have been so mild that we had almost forgotten the harshness... Optimistic as you are, you may have let your guard down and neglected the protection of the most delicate plants. It's not too late!

This autumn, we talked about protecting Dahlias. If you left them in the ground, add a thick layer of mulch. If your stock of leaves or straw is depleted, use cardboard; it may look unsightly, but it's better than nothing!

Potted plants are particularly vulnerable: put them in a sheltered spot, away from frost, in a garage for example... If, like me, you have a few plants waiting in their pots, don't forget them!

Dress your Mediterranean plants like the Oleander with a good winter fleece (the higher the weight, the better the protection...). In the vegetable garden, use this fleece to protect your winter crops... whether they are in the ground or under a cold frame.

If you have beautiful exotics in your garden like Gunnera, check out Michael's advice on how to protect it.

Finally, don't forget to feed and water the birds... and take some photos: frost and snow are so beautiful!
