Gardening and DIY are more than just hobbies: they provide an opportunity to teach children the value of recycling, creativity, and respect for nature. And what better way to learn this than by engaging in nature workshops as a family? Discover our tutorial for making a vase from twigs with your children and its alternatives. This activity, ideal for gardeners and their apprentices, is a fun way to instil ecological values while enjoying quality time together.

Steps for the workshop

1- Preparing the can:

We recommend completing this step before the workshop to prevent any risk of cuts.

  • Ensure that the tin can is clean and dry.
  • Use a file or sandpaper to smooth the sharp edges of the can. This will prevent any risk of cuts during handling.

2- Preparing the twigs:

  • With your child, locate and collect twigs of various sizes. If the branches are too long, break or prune them to fit the height of your can.
  • Prefer dry twigs as they will adhere better to the can. Fresh branches will dry out and shrink, risking detachment from the can after a few weeks.
  • Also consider varying the colours and textures! Twigs from birch, for example, have white and black bark, those from dogwood come in bright shades of red or yellow, and those from hazel have a more natural brown-red appearance.

3- Applying double-sided tape:

  • Wrap the double-sided tape around the tin can, ensuring it adheres well to the entire surface.
  • If your can is large, you can add several horizontal strips for better adhesion of the twigs.

4- Attaching the twigs:

  • Place your can on a flat surface and press each twig firmly against the double-sided tape to ensure it adheres well.
  • Vary the sizes and shapes of the twigs for an aesthetic and natural look.

5- Finishing touches (Optional):

  • To secure your branches while adding a bohemian charm to your vase, wrap a string or twine around the branches and tie a pretty knot.
  • To prevent the can from rusting if you wish to place fresh flowers inside, place a small glass container inside to hold water.
  • Alternatively, you can place dried flowers or artificial plants for a decorative touch!
